Miley Cyrus is glamourous!

oh how glamourous

oh how glamourous

I don’t want to be a hater. I also don’t want to give off the impression that I specifically hate Miley Cyrus, because in reality I don’t hate Miley Cyrus. I don’t know Miley, and besides her proclivity for mentioning Jesus and purity a lot I bet we could be really good friends. Why not.

But I seriously have a problem with her being on the cover of Glamour magazine. She is sixteen years old. Glamour magazine is a magazine for adult women. I’m honestly not sure what angle they’re taking on this one…(more)

Are adult women connecting to Miley as if she were their own child? Do they look up to her? Both of those options freak me out. I think it comes down to the fact that the celebrities our society worships in general are getting younger and younger every year. Want to talk about letting these teen celebrities be kids? Maybe don’t put them on the cover of an adult magazine.

I read the interview online, and honestly it didn’t bother me so much as the entire concept of her being the covergirl did. Although she does seem to conveniently slip in the many life lessons she’s learned over the nanosecond she’s been famous and write off some racial insensitivity behavior as “learning.” Oh yeah and the whole thing about how she’s in love with a 20-year-old. But thats a whole different story that I’ll get into some other time.

I think the 20 year old boyfriend is a little ridiculous, but I mean its not really her fault… She didn’t go looking for him. He was a competitor on Nashville Star and Billy Ray was the host, he introduced Miley to him because he “thought they would get along”. Daddy Cyrus was asking for it…

Hi there…your blog is impressive and your writing is really incredible for someone your age. As a mom of a couple of little Miley fans, I’ve been forced to watch more of her than I ever wanted. I’ll give you my take on why she appeals to me. 1) she is a talented comedienne and performer, who is not afraid to get a laugh. 2) she has the most incredible stamina I’ve seen on a young teen (I used to sleep a lot, eat junk food and watch too much TV) 3) her ambition and drive blow me away. If this is channeled, correctly she could become the first female president in the US (sadly, i think we missed our chance for a while) 4) Every time i see her perform or speak in pubic, my admiration is cloked in fear that she’ll mess it up and go the wrong way because she really faces a lot of pressure for someone this age 5) Notice how much you have in common with her and see why you are so appealing too. I am rooting for Miley, and I’ll root for you too!

barbara- those are some really good points. i have to admit that when watching her show I’m amazed at how outgoing her personality is – i think that’s a great thing for the girls who watch her to strive for. there ARE a lot of things i admire about miley and i should made that clearer.
more of the problems i have are with what we know about her personal life and what those mean for young girls. but thanks for the compliment!

I noticed that on Miley’s cover and Taylor Swift’s cover the Guy-related articles noted are much more subdued than on adult’s covers but that does not mean the content is not in there. Content that isn’t suitable for the older teens on the cover, let alone the younger teens, tweens and pre-tweens that make up the majority of their fan base.

I think to some degree that this trend (is it a trend yet?) of putting teen stars on the covers of adult magazines is quite similar to way that women’s sports in the Olympics has become, in actuality, a “girls” sports.

Participants/cover girls keep getting younger because, in my opinion, our standard of what we find beautiful or acceptable has become the body of pubescent or pre-pubescent girls (re: high fashion models). Real adult women generally cannot aspire to a body type that they have left behind in youth. Yes, they can be fit and look amazing, but an age-appropriate amazing.

This air-brushed idolized youth is just an unrealistic a pipe dream, often for even the cover models (depending on how much air brushing has gone on).

Hearsay has it that Miley dropped her Prius over fears surrounding the Toyota recall. Apparently not. Appears her pet German Shepherd was getting too big for the Prius. So she opted for a much bigger Mercedes hybrid suv. Talented, wealthy and eco-conscious — gotta say one must love Miley.
