There would be no story were it not for Ellie. There's also a great female character in Ratatouille, who actually makes mention of how difficult it was for her to get to where she was in in a male dominated profession. Females in their movies seem to only be included if they are not human-like so it is easier to distance ourselves from a woman who is not fulfilling her role as virginal wife/mother. What Pixar does to trick the audience is they give the woman a cameo where she plays a strong woman then either eliminates her, or puts her back in her place letting the males run the story. But other than THAT (and that there were no female dogs either, which was a little curious considering how long the old man had been away) it was a great film.
