countering feminist backlash
It’s been said again and again that the mainstream media has a problem with feminism. I completely agree with that, given all of the mainstream media I absorb on a daily basis. TV shows and movies make feminists out to be cold, scary bitches (at least until, you know, they’re “tamed” by some equally cold, scary man). The music industry is no better, using women as sex symbols rather than artists with depth and soul. (Hey! At least we aren’t baby-makers anymore! Now we’re an outlet for sexual aggression and domination! Boy, society’s sure made some strides [sarcasm]. And very much like the rest of my teenage-feminist peers, the high school environment—the birthplace of the alleged future leaders of the world, yippee—is less than understanding of our “radical” opinions. …

Maddow v. Buchanan over Sotomayor
I’m honestly not even sure I can articulate my feelings about this video. It makes me sick that this is how some people view affirmative action. It makes me sick to see how white supremacy is still alive. Samhita at feministing sums it up pretty well though.
Also, please consider signing this petition for MSNBC to fire Pat Buchanan. I know I signed.

My Story
In the past few weeks, the fbomb has exploded (haha pun sort of intended). People have been asking about me, about how I found feminism.
I do want to emphasize that of course the fbomb is not about me. It’s about you, it’s about what you want to post, want to share and want to discuss with other teenage feminists. But I think that sharing our stories is important – it’s important to consider everybody’s background, perspective, just generally who they are. So here it is. Be warned, it’s long. But nevertheless, it is me.
When I was 13, I came to the groundbreaking conclusion that America is not the center of the universe. I’ve been lucky enough to have parents addicted to traveling, and have had a stamped passport …

feminist activism: high school edition

It can be hard to be a feminist in high school. I know, I was there. I’m very familiar with the strange looks that you get after stating that you’re a feminist. I’m very familiar with the way people might alienate you. But, sometimes there’s something even harder than being a high school feminist.. Being a high school activist.
When I was in high school, figuring out ways to be an active feminist was quite the ordeal. It took a lot of creativity on my part, and considering the fact that my parents are anti-choice and anti-feminists, I had to be sneaky about it, as well. My activism was limited to school. It can be tough to be much of an activist when a lot of options are limited to …

I Am Pro-Choice
I am pro-choice.
“Pro-choice describes the political and ethical view that a woman should have complete control over her fertility (and the choice to continue or terminate a pregnancy).”
That being said, I do not know if I, personally, would ever be able to recieve an abortion.
While growing up, I watched my mother suffer miscarriage after miscarriage, having had six pregnancies and only three children to show for them. Do not get me wrong: my mother considers my siblings and I each a blessing to her. I am the eldest, her first pregnancy and her first born. After me, my mother concieved again, only to miscarry. My mother concieved and gave birth to my sister when I was almost three. Between my sister and my brother, my mother suffered …

The Case for Male Feminists
Great post by “eitheror” at dailykos.com, who makes the case for male feminists – quite eloquently at that. I’m so glad a man wrote this article for men: it’s so important that this happens more often. He makes some great points about the public reactions to Palin and even Ann Coulter, before summarizing:
“I am defending women. Not because they asked me to do it, or because they need me to do it, but because its the right thing to do. I am defending women because they are human beings who are entitled to the dignity and consideration of that condition like anyone else. How can we say that we aspire to the virtue of our ideals, like equality, when we entertain positions that denigrate our wives, girlfriends, sisters …
