Support Women Artists Sunday: Porcelain and the Tramps

Alaina Beaton

The first time I ever heard the name ‘Porcelain and the Tramps’, I was randomly searching YouTube (as one does on a boring Saturday morning) and their song Gasoline popped up in that Related Videos bar on the side of the page. I clicked on it, figuring that a girl with electric purple hair and a gas mask on couldn’t be half bad. What I didn’t expect was that instead of the pretty, sugar sweet voice that most female singers seem to have nowadays, this girl (who I later discovered was called Alaina Beaton) snarled, screamed and at times crooned her way through a collection of songs that literally blew me away.

I instantly fell in love with her aggressive, at times violent and usually explicit lyrics, and in a way she reminded me of Mary Magdalan with her in-your-face delivery. Her songs, while often sexual and not to everyone’s taste, are refreshing, with songs such as King of the World demanding to be played at full blast with the listener singing along with Alaina at the top of their lungs. Her MySpace describes her music as Industrial/Electronica/Alternative, but honestly, I can’t put her in a genre. Her voice is that versatile that she can sing and scream, switching between two in between songs and sometimes swapping between the two within just one song. It’s that kind of voice that I can’t really describe, but if you want to know what I mean, then look up Favourite Drug or Gasoline.

I guess I just love her badass attitude towards life and how she doesn’t care what anyone else thinks.  She hasn’t put out an album yet, so it’s just YouTube or MySpace for now, but hopefully there’ll be one soon!
