Cougarism

This past weekend I was lucky enough to go to New York City. Primarily I was there to see family. Yes my Mom is from the New York City area, but somehow my parents came to the conclusion that they should raise me in Ohio, where my Dad is from. This event of almost achieving greatness but missing out by thismuch really set the stage for my life in a lot of ways, I think.

ANYWAY, this weekend, while basking in the absolute wonderfulness that is NYC, standing amidst the populous of Union Square, I reflected on how last weekend, I have attended a deep frying party (seriously) in a magical place called Russell Township where horses outnumber people (though that is a guesstimation based on the cynical way I …

Bust Magazine: Ellen, Alia and Teens oh my!

Every so often, a magical thing happens. I open the mailbox and buried beneath bills that have no relevance to me and the catalogues that try to sell me more useless crap, there is Bust Magazine. Today was one of those days.

But today was even more magical for two reasons (2.5 really):

1) Ellen Page and Alia Shawkat are on the cover to promote Whip It!, and therefore are interviewed (ashdklfjasldkfjalkdsfh!!!!). In addition to my love for these young women in general, they also represent the brilliance of Juno and Arrested Development. Clever writing just doesn’t get any better than in these two pieces of artistry.

2) The article after the cover interview: “Smells Like Teen Spirit” – an account by a teenage feminist on the state …

Woman on Woman Crime

Women beware. I have seen the face of the enemy and she is us.

Allow me to introduce you to the Queen Bee and the Female Chauvinist Pig. If you haven’t already met, trust me, you will.

The Queen Bee: She’s the woman who has succeeded. She is queen of her domain. Man has no mastery over her. She stands as a testament to the ideals of feminism; that a woman can be boss and do it just as well if not better than a man. And she will KILL any woman who tries to do the same anywhere near her. Think Highlander: there can be only one.

I’ve been employed by these women and fired by them unfailingly. You cannot have a better idea than her. You …

What I Be Watchin

While I may be out of town this weekend, and have sketchy internet access that varies in its very availability, this does NOT mean you have to suffer! For your enjoyment, here are some things I’ve been watching this week, and my snarky commentary!

Dude, I tried to start one of those lunch room fashion shows. It didn’t go so well. Could’ve been because kids were preoccupied doing WEIRD shit like doing homework…or, even weirder, eating? Iiiiiiiii know…wtf, right? Oh also, we’re sane and don’t think soaking up each other’s hotness as we strut in moderately priced clothing, weaving between plates of sloppy joes and “salisbury steak”while we do so, is the best idea ever.

Rockstare. Blingatude. BFFAEAE. so in touch with the youth, KMart is. Them kids and they’re cuhrazy …

exercising the right to be sexy

Halloween season has begun. Today, I went to the brand new Halloween Store that opened two metro stops away from campus with my friend Lauren, and I did a tally of all the “sexy” things I had the option of being for Halloween: saying them, of course, as I walked past, in a sultry seductive voice (it drove the people in the store nuts). I had the option of being a sexy cop, a sexy robin hoodette, a sexy taxi cab driver (really? Are some taxi cab drivers particularly sexy? Not in my experience), a sexy bumblebee (again, last I checked this was not a sexy thing), a sexy ladybug, a sexy supergirl/catwoman/spiderwoman, a sexy mobster, flapper – you name it, I had the option of being a sexy version …

Growing Up Different

This is a story of growing up different
of growing up wrong.
you are a young child playing in the park and a stranger asks your mother if that’s her little girl
and she frowns and says
no, my son
but inside you are secretly elated.
this is a story of growing up wrong
of never using public restrooms
because you feel too uncomfortable so you hold it in until you get home.
this is a story of a young boy crying herself to sleep
every night for years
and never knowing why.
this is a story of being laughed at at school
and being beaten up on your way home
and hiding the bruises so nobody else would know.
of being paraded in front of others as an example …

TaySwift v. Kanye

So, I didn’t actually see the epic show down between Kanye and Taylor Swift. The VMA’s aren’t really my thing. But you better believe I youtubed it as soon as humanly possible and came up with this:

And I get that everybody was pissed off on behalf of Taylor Swift. I mean, what a terrible situation. There you are, thinking this is a great moment in your career, and then this asshole comes on stage and not only insults you, but leaves you in front of an audience of millions, just standing there. I mean What. The. Hell. Kanye, that sucks.

But I mean, Kanye has proven that he’s a jerk before. Remember in 2006 at the EMAs when his ‘Touch the Sky’ video lost Best Video? He crashed the …

Support Women Artists Sunday: Mary Travers

On September 16th, Mary Travers of Peter, Paul and Mary passed away. This Support Women Artists Sunday goes out to her. I respect her not only because Peter, Paul and Mary had some bangin tunes (seriously, who got through summer camp without a campfire sing-a-long of “I’m Leaving On a Jet Plane”…or who can forget when they found out Puff might not actually be a dragon?), but also because she took her art seriously enough to write about things that actually mattered. I wish more artists did so today.

Mary Travers was an iconic folk singer, a dedicated activist, a writer and a poet, a mother, and, along with Peter Yarrow and Noel (Paul) Stookey, a member of perhaps the most influential folk music trio in American history.
