Our Rights to Privacy Don’t Just Stop in Oklahoma
On November first, a law in Oklahoma will go into effect that collects personal details about every single abortion preformed in the state and post them on a public website. This will cost Oklahoma $281,285 the first year and $256,285 each year after that.
These details include the date of the abortion, the county in which the abortion was preformed, the age, race, and marital status of the mother, the years of education the mother has, the state or country of residence of the mother, the total number of previous pregnancies of the mother; including the number of live births, miscarriages, and induced abortions. (info via Feministing)
And these are only the first eight questions. I really honestly don’t understand the point of this. What does spending all this money to obtain this information even do for the state of Oklahoma? The Center for Reproductive Rights is challenging the law. Let’s hope that this ridiculous thing is thrown out.
This is a complete and total violation of women’s privacy. This isn’t just a law that’s being proposed, it is a law already. The state will spend hundreds of thousands of dollars each year just to put this information online. How is that worth the money? SERIOUSLY, OKLAHOMA GOVERNMENT!?!?!? What is the function of this? I can’t think of one way this will help out the population of the state as a whole.
The fact that this was even allowed to be signed into law shows that we need to speak up more often. We need to show that this is something that is truly important to us. Pro-choice means the freedom to make a private choice that only we can make. I’m taking this as an opportunity to create a call to arms – sisters of the world against our privacy being invaded, unite!<
What do you guys think? Are you as mad as I am?

Yes, this is slightly ridiculous- seems wasteful overall. Try putting some of that funding to better comprehensive sex education or meeting some other need. I could understand places funded by the state being required to keep records of this information, but publishing ALL data seems ridiculous from a privacy standpoint.
On the other hand, as a college student who has tried to find national data on this type of information for research projects and presentations on sex education/ women’s health, I can’t help but think maybe the gathering of information COULD, possibly, be put to some positive use?
They need to justify WHY they are requiring this.

wow, just…wow. How can people be so…i don’t know. Idiotic? Like seriously, what’s the whole point of this? To have the women’s rights be torn from them or what? I don’t really know what I’m saying-I’m to angry to think straight! All i know is this makes me very very very mad!!

Hey Oklahoma, instead of spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to invade women’s privacy, why don’t you use that money to do something that will ACTUALLY HELP WOMEN?!?
Mara @ at 4:21 pm, October 29th, 2009
The only possible explanation is that it’s to scare women. Just like the people who line up in front of clinics and harass people as they enter the building. It’s scare tactics and bullying.

WTF? That information is supposed to be private and to put that on the internet is absolutely cruel, and an invasion of privacy.

So now women who choose what happens to their own bodies are as bad a sex offenders?

“WTF?!” is right. How on earth is this not banned by HIPAA?!

i think it’ll get overturned, mostly because of the strong legal correlation between abortion laws and privacy laws ( lest we cite roe v.wade) Its against each of those womens 14th amendment rights as well as that of the abortion doctors right to practice.
Nope. That won’t happen, and IF it does, a kindergärtner could strike it down.

I remember this being featured on “Have I Got News For You?”, a British programme that I don’t know if you’ll have heard of, where the weeks news is basically entirely ripped to shreds, and mocked.
And boy, was this mocked.
EVERY SINGLE PANALIST was against it. EVERY SINGLE PANALIST hated it.
That NEVER HAPPENS.
It’s an invasion of privacy, and it’s ridiculous.
In my humble opinion, this is.

I’m from Oklahoma. Actually, it’s not happening on November 1. There’s apparently going to be a hearing on it and voting will occur in December, I think? That’s what Jezebel said and I trust their sources. Regardless, it is AWFUL, and I am not very proud of the way my state is choosing to represent itself.

I’m pro-choice. But I think it’ll be interesting to see the records. Maybe if they see anything that denotes that most women have received more than 3 previous abortions, they’ll do something about not using my tax money to fund it.
