Support Women Artists Sunday: Karen O
It was as I was waiting in line at Starbucks this weekend (coffee is life), that I picked up a copy of the “Where The Wild Things Are” soundtrack. Considering that the song in the trailer was Wake Up by Arcade Fire, I was interested to see what would be included in the movie. (By the way there’s a flurry of thoughts up there in my mind about this movie…many summed up by SWPL as always…). However, I was happily surprised to see that Karen O is featured pretty prominently on the soundtrack. Which reminded me…Karen O is a badass I haven’t featured in a SWAS post yet!
Karen Lee Orzolek, better known as Karen O, is the lead vocalist for the New York rock band Yeah Yeah Yeahs. She was born on November 22, 1978 in South Korea.
Karen’s mother is Korean and father is Polish. Karen grew up in New Jersey, and attended Oberlin College, but transferred to New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
Karen O has been noted for her sense of fashion. She is also well known for her outrageous antics during live shows. She is known to often spit water or beer, or sometimes grapes into the crowd. Her on-stage antics have been compared to punk legends like Iggy Pop and Patti Smith.
She currently lives in Los Angeles, California, in the Silver Lake neighborhood.

I watched Heads will roll like a hundred times a day for months. I LOVEE it, it’s so catchy and fun. Plus the werewolf is pretty rad.
Karen O was also featured in BUST not too long ago I think. She’s everywhere.
Being asian american, I have a special appreciation for her
