What’s In a Name? Trouble.

Almost all creation myths feature women. Their roles and their natures, be they good, evil, or neutral, vary from myth to myth. However, one theme seems to be consistent through a variety of cultures. Women in myths, if they have names, are trouble.

Arguably, all women in myths, be they creation myths or otherwise, cause problems for the inevitably male character or protagonist. As these stories come from patriarchal societies, women are usually either in background roles or are villains, and very few have names. But when these female characters are given names in myths, it usually signifies some amount of importance or power. Three examples of this in creation myths are Tiamat, Isis, and Eve.

The SDLC Conference

So this week I’m going to be representing my school at the Student Diversity Leadership Conference in Denver, Colorado. Here’s a description of the program, in case you’re wondering:

The Student Diversity Leadership Conference (SDLC) is a multiracial, multicultural gathering of upper school student leaders (grades 9-12) from across the country that focuses on self-reflecting, forming allies, and building community. Led by a diverse team of adult and peer facilitators, participants will develop effective cross-cultural communication skills, better understand the nature and development of effective strategies for social justice, practice expression through the arts, and learn networking principles and strategies.

I applied for this for my own benefit (because it sounds pretty rad, no?) but also because I think it will help me to better run the fbomb and make it the diverse community…

Happy Thanksgiving

isnt that special

isn't that special

Thanksgiving is probably one of my favorite holidays, partially for the food (nom nom nom) but also because it’s one of the only holidays that has meaning I can really identify with. Of course, it’s origins are kind of crappy, considering some think that the Pequot Massacre of 1637 spurred the first Thanksgiving (an interesting article on that here) but I think the meaning that it takes on today is really nice. We live in such a materialistic culture and taking time to give thanks for what’s real in your life seems like a really nice to tradition to me. Of course, that’s hoping you don’t take part in Black Friday madness…that kind of cancels out repenting for materialism on Thanksgiving.

Anyway…what am I thankful for? Well, I have…

Corduroy Skirts are a Sin

So, it’s Thanksgiving break and my brother just came home from college with plenty of stories about the happenings of the Syracuse drama department. I love me some Spring Awakening and Next to Normal, but other than mainstream Broadway I’m pretty much out of the loop when it comes to drama, and sort of just nodded along to the stories. But then, my brother told me about an impromptu protest that started amongst the students and faculty of his department. After hearing about FBomb blogger Leah’s protesting against Stupak, I was pretty stoked to hear about another instance of student activism.

Last week at Syracuse University, Michelle Deferio, Syracuse resident (not student), and her father stood on a street corner on campus holding a sign that read, “Homosexuality is a sin, Christ can…

Harsh Realities

Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network

When I read the news every morning, I don’t expect to read good things. If I read about a bombing in the Middle East or the murder of a gay teen in Puerto Rico I’m certainly upset about it, but it’s sad to say that I almost expect it. Our world is fueled by hate, and it always seems to have been. But this morning I came across an article that even I didn’t expect to encounter, and sadly it’s familiar to me, more familiar than it ever should be.

This study, Harsh Realities: The Experiences of Transgender Students in School carried out by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Network, is about transgendered youth in American high schools. Its contents are highly disturbing. For instance,…

Support Women Artists Sunday: Meg & Dia

Meg & Dia

Meg & Dia

Meg & Dia is an American band formed in 2004. It was founded by sisters Meg and Dia Frampton, and is now a five-piece act with additional members Nicholas Price, Jonathan Snyder and Carlo Gimenez.

Meg & Dia (also then known as The Meg & Dia Band) released its first album, Our Home Is Gone, in 2005. At the time, the band consisted of just the two Frampton sisters, and the album’s tracks were mostly acoustic songs. Meg and Dia, of Korean and American descent, are sisters from St. George, Utah, and are the founding members of the band. When they were children, Meg received a karaoke machine and Dia received a guitar as a Christmas gift. Dia began singing at local county fairs and retirement centers while Meg…
