Support Women Artists Sunday: Kate Nash

Kate Nash

Kate Nash

Nash was born in Dublin, Ireland, to an English father and Irish mother, on 6 July 1987. She grew up in Harrow, North West London. Nash became interested in music in childhood. She learned how to play the piano at Sandbach School and was taught guitar by teacher Louis Mitchell. She auditioned at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School but was rejected after falling down a flight of stairs, breaking her foot. During her recovery she was housebound and unable to move, so her mother bought her an electric guitar. Nash used this time to focus on her songwriting: she began to write some new songs, finished old ones and decided that she would book a gig at a local bar in Harrow called Trinity on Gayton Road for herself, to showcase her songs.

Nash started her career in 2006. After several gigs, she uploaded her music to MySpace. She found a manager for herself before seeking producers for her music. Nash’s debut was a single, “Caroline’s a Victim”/”Birds,” produced and recorded in Iceland by Valgeir Sigurðsson and released through Moshi Moshi Records in February 2007. In April 2007, Nash was signed to the Polydor offshoot Fiction Records. Nash’s second single and first through Fiction Records, “Foundations”, which she co-wrote with producer Paul Epworth, was released on 18 June 2007 and reached number two in the official UK Singles Chart. In late 2009, Kate joined a band called The Receeders. Kate likes to refer to the band as her “side project” as she says for 2010 she will be mainly focusing on her solo material.

Also, Kate has said on her blog: “Feminism is not a dirty word. It does not mean you hate men, it does not mean you hate girls that have nice legs and a tan, and it does not mean you are a ‘bitch’ or a ‘dyke,’ it means you believe in equality. “

Great choice with the songs put up, although thinking about it, it’s kinda hard to go wrong-all her songs have a really nice sentiment. I would recomend “Mouthwash” and “Mariella” especially.

I love Kate Nash! I especially recommend ‘Foundations’ and ‘Pumpkin Soup’ (weird title, but so cute, escpecially with her accent!). Plus, reading her views on feminism – as @Brenna said – makes me love her all the more.

Forgot to add – I love these Support Women Artist Sunday articles. May I suggest Paloma Faith (red-haired, brassy-voiced singer and actress) or Megan Washington (adorable Australian songbird) for your next one?

I’ve never listened to Kate Nash before, well, not very much, anyhow. I thought she was a country singer (I think it’s the last name Nash). But, she obviously isn’t and she reminds me of Regina Spektor.

I love Kate Nash so much! I’ve liked her for about 3 years now and she is my idol and finally got to meet her last Saturday! Her views on feminism, sexism, homophobia etc. are part of the reason I love her so much – she’s just so inspiring <3
