I was excited at the possibility of a gender neutral national anthem, but I definitely agree that it isn't at the top of the list of things that would make women's lives better. Still, I remember singing the national anthem as a child and thinking "Why don't they mention girls?"

It'd be fine by me to change their national anthem to acknowledge all Canadians the country welcomes as its own people, since of course that's exactly what they do: they welcome men, women, and anyone else coming to their land as Canadians, no matter what gender, creed, religion or color they come from.

Huh. I always thought the "son" was a reference to the son of God.

Personally I'd rather the anthem not be changed, but I would not get as upset as the people you quoted. The way they're talking is the epitome of making mountains out of molehills!

I agree that off a variety of feminist issues, this ranks a little low in importance. I'm not from Canada but I don't see the harm in making the anthem gender neutral. It's scary that people are getting so upset about it; what is there really to be so angry about? THAT is what bothers me.
