The Asking
It’s time for prom! I’ve refused to go prom all these years but decided to go this year since it’s my senior year. Besides, the prospect of mocktails is just too much to decline…
Anyway, I’m always fascinated and agitated by the prom traditions. Having emigrated from Korea seven years ago, prom is something still foreign to me and since this is going to be my first and last prom, I can’t say that I’m not secretly excited for it. I’ve reserved a table with a few good friends and without any pressure of dates, we’re going to spend a jolly good time (in other words, I hope to spend a ninety-dollar-worth of time).
Inevitably, I started noticing a sequence of flamboyant “asking.” Without hesitation, boys assume the role of …

The Runaways (Filmed and Real)
Yesterday, I went to see the movie The Runaways. I am simultaneously a huge fan of Dakota Fanning and Joan Jett herself while not such a huge fan of Kristen Stewart, and wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. And I must say, I was pleasantly surprised.
The movie itself is interesting. It’s not exactly plot driven, but rather a documentation of The Runaways – their success, their sex-drugs-rock and roll lifestyle and predominately both of these factors mixed with their very young ages (lead singer Currie was 15 and Jett was 17). Dakota Fanning, as always, gave a fantastic performance and I have to admit, despite my previous statements against Kristen Stewart’s acting and her inability to be a good role model, she was very good in this movie.…

Thoughts on Feminism
When I was in first form my Indian teacher told me that feminism was to differentiate yourself from the door mat. It meant respect for others, but mostly respect for your self. Feminism is the ability to not only stand up for what you believe in as a woman but love and the high esteem you hold for yourself and the rest of the world.
I have long ago associated being a feminist with being a humanitarian. In my opinion, the world has forgotten what it means to fight for justice at all cost. Equal rights are important but being your brothers keeper is more important, because only then can we get closer to achieving world peace.
Our great hope lies in encouraging all that is good not forcibly repressing …

Support Women Artists Sunday: Rachel Roy and Jennifer Venditti
So, I recently got an e-mail in regards to SWAS – a regular feature on the FBomb. A reader asked why SWAS was restricted only to musicians…and basically I could think of no other answer than, “I’m really into music and not artistically inclined in other areas so that was really all that occurred to me.” I think it’s a damn good idea to expand the boundaries of these posts to all types of art – visual, design, dance, drama, writing, film: you name it, let’s SWAS it. I’m starting it off all on my own this week, but if you guys are fans of or know of any outstanding women in these fields, please email me suggestions (juliez@thefbomb.org). But for now…
This week SWAS is all about fashion designer …

Equality
I am a face of change
No you are not deranged
Change of what? you ask
Change that the underanged see
Female Stereotypes
I am still a face of change
And you are still not deranged
You tell me you don’t see an issue with female stereotypes in America
You say that there is no need for the change but then you must be deranged
Sitting inside because we are too weak to help the men outside, that’s a lie
We always wear pink, Gosh, I’d rather die
Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, please don’t make me cry
I am a face of change
I fight for my gender’s proper portrayal
If you don’t see the need for change you are obviously deranged

Male Studies (As Opposed to Women’s Studies)
On Monday, the New York Times reported about the creation of a “Male Studies” program at Wagner College in Staten Island.
Christina Hoff Sommers, a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute and author of “The War Against Boys: How Misguided Feminism Is Harming Our Young Men” decided to throw in her two cents (and really, that’s what it’s worth) saying, “I am concerned that it’s widespread in the United States that masculinity is politically incorrect.”
Dr. Lionel Tiger, a professor of anthropology at Rutgers, and supporter of Male Studies, identifies feminism as the root of all evil, calling it, “a well-meaning, highly successful, very colorful denigration of maleness as a force, as a phenomenon.”
Wow. Where to start? Well, first of all, the last time I checked, …

Girlzone.com – An Alternative to Beauty, Boys and Fashion Saturated Websites
For those of you girls looking for something different in the websites that you visit, I would like to introduce you to Girlzone.com. I’m the Managing Editor of this great website, which was one of the first independent website for girls created. Girl Zone was launched in 1997 with a specific “progressive” mission in mind. We wanted girls to feel good about who they are now and their potential for the future. Girl Zone is about the whole girl. While most traditional media for teen girls offer up mostly beauty, boys and fashion, Girl Zone offers content related to all aspects of a girls life.
Girl Zone is a hip and healthy website which provides girls with a chance to voice their opinions and to connect with other girls …

B-Listed interviews Nancy Lublin
A while back B-Listed (which, if you don’t know is this really cool pop-culture human rights blog aimed at influencing the media) interviewed Nancy Lublin, who I think is really rad.
Basically, Nancy Lubin started Do Something.org which is this really awesome organization that tries to motivate teens to get off their asses and, well, do something – volunteer, help other people, etc. etc. As a teen myself, I know how hard this can be (and how badly adults want us to in fact unglue ourselves from TV on the internet…and how very hard that is) so I definitely appreciate her valiant effort.
B-Listed offered that the FBomb re-post this interview, and I’m happy to present it below:
What do you think it is about Do Something that motivates …
