Support Women Artists Sunday: Ellen Page

Ellen Page

A lot of people may criticize Juno, saying that it’s an unrealistic portrayal of teen pregnancy (and these are valid claims) – but it’s hard to deny how awesome Ellen Page was in that movie. She’s funny, clearly smart and a very talented actress and she definitely deserves some FBomb love.

Born Ellen Philpotts-Page on February 21, 1987 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The daughter of a teacher and a graphic designer, Ellen Page took an interest in theater from a young age. She performed in her first local production in the fifth grade and won Canada’s prestigious Gemini nomination for her role in the made-for-TV movie Pit Pony in 1997. The busy actress went on to appear in several Canadian television series, including the Pit Pony spin-off, Trailer Park Boysand ReGenesis, as well as the award-winning film Marion Bridge.

Though Page was first introduced to American audiences in the Lifetime TV movie Homeless to Harvard: The Liz Murray Story, she received her first real publicity for the provocative 2005 indie thriller Hard Candy. Her haunting performance as a 14-year-old victim-turned-attacker caught the attention of director Brett Ratner, who cast her as Kitty Pryde in Page’s first big-budget feature, X-Men: The Last Stand.

But it was Ellen Page’s 2007 performance as a pregnant teen in the much heralded indie dramedy Juno that put her in the international spotlight. Her quick wit and hidden vulnerability as the wise and innocent Juno McGuff earned the young star an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.

I love Ellen Page! Recently she was quotes saying, “Of course I’m feminist! What can we go back to? Clothes hangers?”

I saw Whip It yesterday (it’s only been out a couple of weeks in the UK) and wow.

I was trying to save that interview, but my mum threw away the paper before I could cut it out. She was talking about global warming as well. But I do love that quote.

Kinda unrelated, but there is a girl in my year who looks so similar to Ellen Page it is unbelievable. It’s vaugely freaky.

Oh man, I love Ellen Page. She’s quirky, and cute, and an amazing actress.

She’s awesome! It’s so refreshing to see a star embracing feminism. Her and Emma Watson, also a bad-ass actress who identifies as a feminist, rock!

I too love Ellen Page, but I had serious qualms with Whip It. It was another one of those films that tries to talk about ‘empowered women’ but fails to follow through on all counts. The male coaches? The sleazy boyfriend? I don’t know, I was definitely bothered and was wondering if anyone else felt the same.

    *bothered me

Whip It was totally uncompelling AND it made it seem like her primary motivation for joining the roller derby was her male love interest. My friends were all expecting to feel empowered but ended up being pissed! That being said, I LOVE Ellen Page, Alia Shawkat, and Kristin Wiig.

I liked Whip It. There were some parts of the movie where I was like…no. But most of it was entertaining and made me feel proud. I am so proud that Ellen Page is Canadian!!
