National Punch a Slut Day

take note, FB trolls...

take note, FB trolls...

The facebook trolls who think they’re hilarious for their misogynistic groups and events are at it again, folks!

Some FBomb readers and a recent Jezebel article alerted me to a series of “slut punching” events – one a week-long event that I believe was removed, and another, which will merely last a day.

The latter event includes some seriously gross comments, such as:

Dongie Lee:
Some of you need to stfu about violence toward women. boohoo. Ever thought about violence toward men? toward elderly? toward kids? And I bet 99.9% of you fuckers bitching and crying aren’t doing a fucking thing to stop any real violence. Let’s also not forget that this group isn’t about punching women but about punching slutts. Do criminals deserve time in prison? Yes. Do slutts deserve to be punched ? YES. It’s as simple as that.

and also some pretty awesome retorts by Anne Russell:
This is the most disgusting group I’ve come across yet. You people are sickening. Not to mention that if a real woman ever put her tit in your hand you’d have to call one of your friends to ask what you’re meant to do with it. Enjoy living in your mastubatory fantasy patriarchy in the little time you have before it crumbles, you puerile misogynistic pieces of shit.
A word for those who say “wtf don’t get upset it’s just the internet”:
It’s not just the internet. It’s every billboard of an airbrushed model, every rape victim who gets blamed for wearing a short skirt, every appearance gynaecologist, every leering 50-year-old making us afraid to walk around after dark. If women didn’t have all this real-life stuff bombarding us on a day-to-day, these groups probably wouldn’t get the level of rage aimed at them.

and Peterson Toscano:
Not funny, not cool. Instead this is violent and abusive. With the outrageous rates of violence against women, we need to oppose the hatred of women and call it what it is.

But seriously, it’s amazing how so many of the “defensive” comments center around these groups being jokes. If by joke you mean you have no intention of actually “punching a slut” then seriously what’s the point? To display your ignorance and act in a way that you KNOW will insult those of us who possess our full cognitive abilities? Or by joke do you mean that you actually find violence against women funny? Which is just disgusting.

Now, I don’t want to make generalizations about the people who joined this group specifically, but I know that I personally have been invited to groups such as I Hate The Kid At The Party Who Rapes All The Girls which focuses on how desperate the rapist is and not that, you know, RAPE IS A TERRIBLE THING. But in my experience, including this group, the people who make them are usually dumb, bored (often, but not always, incredibly privileged) kids who don’t think AT ALL before taking 5 minutes to set up the event/group and then inviting all their friends to join.

While I appreciate the time people take to refute the creation of these groups, such as some of the great comments above by the likes of Anne and Peterson, in the end the people who initiate these groups are just complete douchebags with a world view skewed by the lovely little bubble they live in. And seriously, some times retaliation isn’t much better, such as the event Punch A Misogynist in the Head Week a response to the “Punch Slut in the Head Week.” Seriously? We can’t pick and choose who “deserves” violence people – NOBODY deserves violence, no matter how disgusting they are.

As for the girls who join violent, slut-shaming events/groups…I honestly can’t speak for their motivations. After reading some of their comments, I can guess that they think guys will think they’re cool for supporting sexist ideas – meaning that they will conform to those ideas, which sexist guys DO in fact love. But honestly I’m embarrassed and sad for them for:

1) expending the energy to impress sexist guys and

2) still living in their little bubbles where even though 1 out of every 6 American women have survived rape they still believe violence against women doesn’t really exist, not really. Because if they did understand what violence against women is and how prevalent it is, they couldn’t possibly be parts of these groups without being devoid of a soul.

The only advice I can give is this – these groups are great examples of how misogyny is alive and well. Use these groups as examples the next time somebody tells you we don’t need feminism any more. Other than that, I guess we can fight with these idiots on the walls of their groups, or we could be a little more productive and report their groups to Facebook. Either way, let’s not be hypocrites about it and stop retaliating with our own violent groups.

very well written, a great article, couldn’t agree more.

  • Freddy-May @ at 11:47 am, May 17th, 2010

Linked to on my Tumblr; this is an excellent post. The only thing I’d say to Doogie whateverface that you didn’t is, who is deciding what makes a woman a slut?

  • Katherine C. @ at 11:50 am, May 17th, 2010

Oh, Facebook, you amoral, amorphous construction. *facepalm* Great post; I especially liked how you addressed the whole “joke” psedeo-defense.

  • typhonatemybaby @ at 1:36 pm, May 17th, 2010

guys: how many times do i have to say this? OBVIOUS TROLL IS OBVIOUS.

they WANT a reaction. The WHOLE PURPOSE OF THE GROUP is to get people iether laughing or posting rage commnets on their wall, at whcih point they will just laugh more, or simply post a “tl;dr” or “cool story bro” you and shut you down utterly.

you cant beat them by posting massive rants, however justified, to persuade them otherwise.

  • james @ at 2:41 pm, May 17th, 2010

    don’t feed the trolls

  • typhonatemybaby @ at 2:43 pm, May 17th, 2010

    indeed

  • SarahC @ at 7:50 pm, May 17th, 2010

If we feel so strongly about this, let’s fight back. How about National Hug That Girl Who’s Always Being Called A Slut Day? Or National Thank A Feminist Day? Lets support good sorts and quit feeding the trolls.

  • Tessa @ at 8:59 pm, May 17th, 2010

Great article! I completely agree with you. Purporting violence against a certain group of people is never okay, no matter how terrible they are. The way we can deal with this for the time being is perhaps start our own groups, like SarahC said, that promote good messages.

  • O'Phylia @ at 10:15 pm, May 17th, 2010

Wait, are there not elderly women? And is it impossible for a kid to also be a girl???

  • Samuel W. @ at 2:21 am, May 18th, 2010

Oh god, it’s another stupid ploy for attention by another group of hateful, blustering male idiots who would know at least a little better probably if not for alcohol/tobacco/some sort of mind-altering substance. You don’t need to say anything else: anyone in the ‘National Punch a Slut Day’ (how charming!) group clearly lacks shame, for one thing, along with either: wit, decency, tact, kindness, thoughtfulness, a brain, a heart, or a soul, or some combination of those neglected elements. God knows whoever created it probably lacks all of the above! Thanks for making everyone aware and infuriated, but try to stay optimistic. As a guy, I can say it thankfully isn’t all about being hateful, idiotic, tuneless, thoughtless, brainless, or being all-around assholes for us. KEEP THE FAITH!!

  • Samuel W. @ at 11:22 am, May 18th, 2010

And how about instead of “National Punch a Misogynist Day”, tempted as I would be for these people, we start groups like “National Hug Your Sister Day”, or “National Hug Your Mother Day”, or even “National Thank God for Gloria Steinem Day”? Fighting violence with violence may seem tempting at first, but when you’re dealing with trolls, countering them with positive messages works a hell of a lot better.

  • Sarah @ at 5:17 pm, May 18th, 2010

I got punched today, now I know why.

  • Holly @ at 2:15 am, May 19th, 2010

uff. thank goodness for the outlet of the report button.

  • rockergrrrl @ at 10:06 am, May 19th, 2010

I’m gonna start an event called “hug a feminist day” or something like that when I get home (my school blocks facebook). I’ll post the link later.

  • Toongrrl @ at 5:09 pm, May 20th, 2010

How could they? They are beyond vile.

  • Mark @ at 12:35 pm, May 30th, 2010

    It’s a joke. Calm down.

  • Danielle @ at 2:18 am, June 30th, 2010

The internet (i.e. dumbasses posting on the internet) can be so acidic. It literally makes me sick to my stomach.

P.S. That post by Anne Russell was pure genius.

  • Carla @ at 3:56 pm, May 9th, 2011

I find these pages funny. And I’m not some “loose-moralled” or poorly educated idiot. I just know when a joke is a joke. I am friends with a lot of guys who would laugh at this, and NEVER, EVER lay their hands inappropriately on ANY girl. It’s called a joke, and while I’m all for equal rights for us women (of course I am!), I do believe that this is an overreaction to say the least.

  • Karen @ at 3:13 pm, May 12th, 2011

I think you bring up a good point by saying that the more productive thing we can do is to report such misogynist pages.
If you go to your fb home page and type in “slut” you’ll see a whoooole lot of offensive things. I know I’ve reported a lot of them, but if more people do maybe they will finally come down and prove a point. Please help a sista out in removing this sexist shit from such a popular site :)

  • Renee @ at 9:24 am, May 28th, 2011

great article but when I read about this I laughed my tuckus off while violence against women is 100% unacceptable why doesn’t everyone just talk about stopping violence against people just everyday people doesn’t matte whether your black white man or woman being hur affects us all..having said that I’m sorry I missed punch a slut day I’m just gonna have to make sure I don’t miss smack a bitch week

  • Rachel @ at 3:37 pm, July 26th, 2011

The article was not very well written, and it seems to me that these groups were probably started by women; what reason does a man have for hating a slut? The easy way to solve this problem is to not be a slut
