Support Women Artists Sunday: Electrik Emily
Electrik Emily is a 26 year old rock musician, blogger, and all around “women in music” buff, currently living in Seattle, WA.
Born in rural Pennsylvania, her musical career began as a rebellious teen in high school, forming her own all-female rock band in the tradition of The Runaways, playing fast, aggressive, and loud music. In and out of bands all through college, Emily decided to “go her own way” by becoming a feminist backed solo artist after taking a women studies class.
“I finally had an intellectual epiphany you could say, that reflected my thoughts and feelings about being female in a world that didn’t always feel welcoming. I knew I was a feminist, I just never had a word for it until then.”
Emily follows a Riot Grrrl inspired DIY ethic. From writing all of her own music, recording all tracks, mixing, mastering, photography, press, and creating and maintaining her website.
Her lyrical topics bring to light women’s feelings and issues such as body image in “Fat Grrrls,” media objectification of women in “Put Me Back Together,” self-esteem in “More Than We See,” and old fashioned heartbreak and anger in “Too Late.”
“It feels like I can’t write a plain old dance song. My music always has something intense to say, even if I don’t always intent to start the song out that way.”
Electrik Emily’s influences include The Donnas, Joan Jett, Vixen, Heart and Girlschool.
“I craved and still crave hard rockin all-female bands. I dig through dusty crates at record stores, comb blogs to find out about new women in the industry, and read every book on their history. Someone has to continue to keep their names and songs alive. If not, they will be lost forever.”
Currently, Emily is working on some new material, writing in her music blog, and hosting a radio show on Women Rock Radio. She hopes to tour soon, and volunteer at Seattle’s Girls Rock Camp.
