Support Women Artists Sunday: Janelle Monae

Janelle Monae

Janelle Monae

Janelle Monae’s creativity knows no bounds. Her debut studio album The ArchAndroid (Suite II and III) is a 70-minute concept album where her alter-ego, Cindi Mayweather becomes a “messiah-esque figure to the android community of Metropolis”. She’s co-written seventeen out of the eighteen songs and they jump unabashedly from pop to jazz to punk. The video for her single Tightrope shows her shimmying in a tuxedo and bow tie doing the tightrope dance and she just looks effortlessly cool. Her album has received critical acclaim but it seems like there are lots of people who have no idea who she is despite the fact that, to me, everything about her screams superstar. Intelligent and imaginative, there’s a Janelle Monae song for everyone to love.

I think I’ve seen her ads around FB. I’ll definitely have to look her up.

I agree she is a superstar. Look at her tribute to Prince.Simply amazing!

I tried to like her but she’s annoying.

She is a jem. My brother was absolutely baffled and dare I say a little disgusted by her Prince tribute because of the way she danced and just literally acted a fool. Probably because he’s never seen it before and people like him and Dia (commenter above) tend to automatically reject things are different.

I loved her performance (and I love the Tightrope video and her other live performances) because so rarely do we see women in entertainment really fucking ENJOYING the music they create. Janelle Monae can DANCE. And I don’t mean super controlled choreography or dip it low, sexualized bullshit. She is a superstar in the making who puts out great music and isn’t afraid to wiggle her hips and swing her arms in a manner you’d never see in somebody’s rap video.

    <3 Janelle!
