Saturday Vids: Feminist Attack on Snack Factory’s Pretzels
In case you haven’t already seen Snack Factory’s disgusting new ad for their “thin” pretzel crisps, have a gander:
Disgusting, right? Well, thankfully, one guy decided to fight back with creativity and the facts (you CAN be too thin):
I love many things about this video. Primarily, that somebody responded intelligently to these ads and is attempting to raise awareness in the face of the media clearly doing their best to dispel the truth about eating disorders. I also love that a guy did this – unreasonably high body image standards in our culture AFFECT MEN and I’m so happy this guy is raising awareness on that front – both in the facts he presented and just the basic fact that HE took action.
The fashion world is oft misconstrued as lovin’ on the skinny-types and leaving us with un-concaved bellies and fleshy arms feeling lovelorn. However this is an undue misconception which must be eliminated as it is, in fact, not entirely true. Big lips, big lashes; behold the pudgy juggernauts of noughties beauty.
Are your lips on the lean side? Fatten them up artificially and you too can resemble an allergy victim! Use a ‘lip plumper’ for distended lips with a purplish tinge for that freshly-beaten-housewife look we all covet.
The quintessential ‘lip plumper’, which you’ll know if you’ve ever cracked open the pages of Vogue, is DuWop’s Lip Venom. Smear your gaunt mouth with this syrupy goodness and within minutes your pout will be as bloated as a post-Christmas lunch …
Justin Bieber may be the closest my generation will ever get to Beatlemania. The kid sings purely romantic non-graphic songs about his “baby” (that would be you, dear 13 year old girls of the world) and his face looks a new born puppy snuggling with a bunny under a rainbow. And, really, I have nothing against him personally despite the fact that my cynical heart tends to look at celebrities my own age and roll its eyes in disgust. My problem with him mainly lies in the way our society reacts to him.
I recently got my Bust Magazine in the mail (an epic monthly event for me). I very much enjoy the “Pop-Tart” column, but this week’s analysis of the double standards of Bieber fever, written by Wendy McClure, …
Anybody Else Freaked Out By Child Beauty Pageants?
I have to ask this question: am I the only one who’s completely freaked out by child beauty pageants? I mean, whenever I’m flipping through our 900 channels (887 of which are useless) and happen across the show Toddlers & Tiaras, I can’t help but watch it. I just sit there with this overall dumb look on my face because I am both mesmerized and horrified by these strange, nightmare-like creatures that are some people’s idea of “beauty.”
I don’t care what the message was in Miss Congeniality, beauty pageants are messed up. Having full grown women prance around in bikinis to prove their self-confidence is degrading enough, but watching little 5-year-old girls do the same seems borderline abusive. These are tiny, tiny girls. Babies. Yet their coaches …
Pads, Phallus, and Gloria: Advocating for Trash Bins and More
I recently came across Gloria Steinem’s “If Men Could Menstruate” as I was perusing over required reading packet. In this article, Steinem creates an alternate universe where the power of the penis is amplified by not women but men’s ability to menstruate. She hypothesizes that it would be no surprise to find the government taking an active role in making “monthly discomforts” more convenient, boys competing for longest and largest amount of monthly blood loss, and boyfriends encouraging intercourse at “that time of the month.” As I lmfao-ed, I remembered a certain incident at a yacht party in the early summer.
My friend’s parents had organized a yacht party to celebrate his graduation. Families and friends showed up in their cocktail dresses and suave suits. Before boarding, …

You may remember Nona from the post I wrote about GirlDrive (her really super awesome book) and her guest post about Hooking Up. Well, Nona recently did some social experimentin’ involving feminism, to some interesting results.
Give Nona some love on twitter: twitter.com/girldrive and her blog.
Dear World,
Today,
I will speak out.
Today,
I will report the man,
Who gropes me on the street.
Today,
I will tell my story,
To anyone who asks.
Today,
I will warn every woman and girl,
Of the man on the street,
The one with the Santa Clause beard and lifeless eyes.
Today,
I won’t keep quiet,
When I see and hear what’s wrong.
Today,
I will speak out.
Tomorrow,
I will speak out.
Just try to keep my quiet.
I dare you.
