Support Women Artists Sunday: The Puppini Sisters

The Puppini Sisters

The Puppini Sisters

Deja vu is a sensation that can give you the jitters, that’s why The Puppini Sisters, a trio from England, deliver for a special Spooky version of SWAS this week. The Puppini Sisters do a 1940s harmony cover of popular songs, delivering a double dose of eerie deja vu-the feelings of an era past and a head scratching when you hear a song you’ve heard on the radio in a completely unique way.

ANYWAYS. The members are Italian Marcella Puppini and English Stephanie O’Brien and Kate Mullins. Although the three are not related, they chose their name in tribute to The Andrews Sisters. Puppini first studied fashion design at St. Martins School of Art, and later music at Trinity College of Music where she met Stephanie O’Brien and Kate Mullins. The Puppini Sisters are currently supported by a three-piece band featuring Blake Wilner on guitar, Pat Levett on drums/percussion and Henrik Jensen on upright bass.

The group was founded in 2004 by Marcella Puppini after she was inspired by the animated film Les Triplettes de Belleville (2003). In 2005 they were signed by UCJ (Universal Classics and Jazz). The group appeared in the 2009 Jonathan Creek New Year’s special “The Grinning Man”, (performing their 2007 single “Spooky”). The band also features on the soundtracks for US TV series Greys Anatomy and Chuck. They also played at Glastonbury Music Festival in 2009.

The band has three albums. Their debut Betcha Bottom Dollar reached number nine in the new artists chart and number two in jazz. Their second album, The Rise and Fall of Ruby Woo reached top ten in the jazz records as well.
