The Beauty of Choice

Being a feminist with a large number of not-so-feminist pro-life friends does tend to give you some perspective. Today, having a heated argument with a friend over abortion, was one of those times I really felt our difference in perspectives.

Later, after the debate, reflecting on the exchange when my temper had cooled off, I found that I was more upset than angry. I really value my friendships and I hate it when issues like this come between us. But the pro-choice cause is something that I care about passionately and there are times when you have to make difficult decisions about your priorities. The only thing you can do is hope that, after all the anger has passed, you can still recognise the people you care about in the …

Does Society Hate Feminism?

It’s interesting to analyze people’s reactions towards feminism. Some people find it unnecessary, exaggerated, outdated, weird, a waste of women’s time, and even “unfeminine” (that one is definitely my favorite). On the other hand, I had a completely different reaction. I’ve always felt that feminism fights for justice and for what is right. Whenever I read feminist magazines and blogs, I find comfort in these words written by individuals who think just like me. When I read these articles, I always get the impression that these writers point out the most basic and logical observation on injustice and basic human rights. So you would think that most people would agree with these concepts, but unfortunately, this is not the case when the message is coming from a feminist.

Whenever I’m …

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving F-Bombers (and to my international readers…happy Thursday, November 25th!). The FBomb is going to take a break from posting today through Sunday. Here are some things you can do while I selfishly stuff myself with food and sleep instead of running this blog:

- Read some back posts. Here are a few of my faves:

Justin Bieber and Double Standards

A Feminist Goes to the Ballet (by Nellie B.)

Proclaiming Oneself as a Male Teenage Feminist (by Paul S.)

Corduroy Skirts are a Sin

Pretty Little Liars and Teen Sexuality (by Anna S.)

- Submit an Article!

Take this time off to write a post! Just to remind you, posts should be about 300-600 words (although I’m flexible on length) and they can be about anything feminist or …

Excerpt from a Fairytale

Girls should have exoskeletons, he told her.

Their ribs could be can openers.
My parents never touched each other enough, she said.

He traced her stomach like a coloring book, stopping

And starting to a thousand imaginary traffic lights.

“Happiness is a cliché,” he told her.

“I want to feel in black and white,” she said.

She wanted her heart to print receipts.
Their menus rest on the table like slain birds.

She garnished her soul like it was a thing to be consumed.

Every human being is waiting, she said,

At the bus stop of someone else’s

soul. wanting to be taken to Paradise.
So stop waiting, he said.

He imagined her soul bobbing away, like a balloon.

She wanted to kill him and press him into the

dictionary …

Formspring and Feminism

Bullying has been an issue that has been affecting our country for a long time, but has recently recaptured our nation. Lets face it, some people are mean. It seems, however, that children and teenagers are becoming meaner with new technologies available to them. Through texting, twitter, facebook etc, there are more ways to attack others than ever before.

Formspring is the worst of them all. Because of a slew of bizarre questions I received on mine, I decided to deactivate it. Thankfully, I have confidence in myself, and therefore am not phased by bullies who chose to lurk on my page. But I know that there are a lot of people out there who do not have the same self assurance that I do, and are greatly affected when …

An Interview with Selena Torrado

A few weeks ago, I met Selena Torrado, a teen living in New York who started her own high school feminist club called Femtastic! I was ecstatic to see that someone shared my passion for reaching out to teens about the “important” stuff; the point of this post is to say to you, Teenage Girls of the World, if your school doesn’t already have a club that deals with women’s rights, equality, feminism, etc. – IT NEEDS ONE. And if you think starting a club is too hard, Selena and I will attest that it’s totally doable, and totally worth it. Check out my interview with Selena about her club Femtastic!, and see if it doesn’t inspire you to start a feminist club of your own!

Support Women Artists Sunday: Thao Nguyen

Thao with The Get Down Stay Down is a San Francisco, California-based (formerly Falls Church, Virginia) alternative folk rock music group. It consists of Thao Nguyen (vocals, guitar), Adam Thompson (bass guitar), and Willis Thompson (drums).

Thao began playing guitar at age 12. She began performing and recording as an indie-folk duo with a high school friend, Brenna Clerkin. Raised in Falls Church, Virginia with her single mother, she often practiced her songs while working at her mother’s laundromat. She often cites Lilith Fair as an inspiration for her desire to become a singer/songwriter. After recording an EP that differed from her initial style, she began performing as a soloist with her acoustic guitar.

Nguyen met drummer Willis Thompson while studying for her degrees in Sociology and Women’s Studies at …

Saturday Vids: I Am This Land Video Contest

Breakthrough is thrilled to announce the launch of the I AM THIS LAND video contest, a campaign that aims to start conversations about diversity, acceptance and the future of this country. I AM THIS LAND is a response to a year of divisive rhetoric. We’re saying, enough is enough: the new year provides the opportunity for us to celebrate our diversity and recommit to a country where we value difference and one another.

We want you to make a video using the phrase “I AM THIS LAND” to express your hope for a more positive and open-minded America. You can make any type of video: an animation, short documentary, music video, any other genre or a mash up- just give us goosebumps!

As part of the project, we …
