Not So Gleeful: What’s Wrong With GQ’s Latest Shoot
So, I know this is kind of dated, but please make fun of me, consider my humble excuse of being a senior coming up on college application deadlines, and then attempt to enjoy!
The reaction from feminists to the “Glee” themed photo shoot in the newest issue of GQ – a popular men’s magazine – wasn’t exactly surprising. The shot, which was done by infamous photographer Terry Richardson (no stranger to overtly sexual photo shoots and even sexual harassment claims) features three of the main stars of the Fox TV show in almost pornographic poses. Fair Pay Isn’t Always Equal Pay…Right?
The Senate is considering a bill that would make it easier for women to sue their employers for wage discrimination on the basis of sex. While the bill has received support from women’s organizations and President Obama, who referred to it as “a common-sense bill,” the author of this New York Times article (interestingly enough, a woman) was not so sure that the bill was a good idea. Essentially, the author argued that though women currently earn 77 cents for every dollar that men earn, this statistic ignores other factors determining salary. Historically speaking, men are likely to have had stronger educational experiences than their female counterparts if they were educated more than about 30 or 40 years ago. Why Couldn’t I Say “Rape”
One of my extremely good friends is finishing out her high school career abroad, and I spent the weekend at her apartment with some other friends as a send-off party before she left. When we were discussing how she would get around, since she can’t drive yet, she said that she wouldn’t go into a taxi alone. I agreed.
“Yeah, that’s not a good idea, you don’t wanna get…hurt,” I said.
The word I had in mind was raped, but I felt uncomfortable saying it. She didn’t, though.
“Yeah, since I definitely do not want to get raped or molested or something by a cab driver,” she said.
Why did I have such a problem saying the word rape? Seriously, what was wrong with me? Rape is a crime, just …

Are Chivalry and Feminism Incompatible?
This summer, I had doors opened for me, was ushered into rooms ahead of my male counterparts, and was even offered a spot in line ahead of the boys. I attended an amazing international program where I met teenagers from thirty-two different countries, and I learned that in many parts of the world chivalry is not, in fact, dead.
Apparently, my international friends (who came from countries ranging from Kazakhstan to the Netherlands) share a belief that women ought to be treated differently in certain situations. Maybe it’s just automatic behavior, but these boys acted differently from the seventeen-year-old boys I know, who would never think to say “You first.”

Support Women Artists Sunday: Sky Larkin
Sky Larkin is a three piece indie band from Leeds, United Kingdom who formed in 2005.The band consists of Katie Harkin (Lead Singer, Guitar), Doug Adams (Bass), Nestor Matthews (Drums)
In common with many bands from Leeds, Sky Larkin released two singles on the Leeds based label Dance To The Radio. Songs of theirs appeared on Dance To The Radio compilation albums ‘Something I Learned Today’ and ‘Out Of The Woods And Trees’, the former featuring ‘Summit’ and the latter featuring the Napoleon IIIrd remix of ‘Keepsakes’ In both 2006 and 2007 they appeared on the unsigned stage at the Leeds Festival.
The album was recorded in Seattle in Spring 2008 with Sleater-Kinney and Death Cab For Cutie producer John Goodmanson.

Saturday Vids: Vag Magazine
Vag Magazine is a new web comedy created and written by Leila Cohan-Miccio and Caitlin Tegart. Vag Magazine takes place behind the scenes of Vag, a hipster third wave feminist magazine a la Bust. Vag Magazine’s cast is basically a who’s who of New York’s up-and-coming female comedians like The Big Gay Sketch Show‘s Kate McKinnon and Shannon O’Neill, who was recently named one of “Three to Watch” by Time Out New York.

I am in their house, his house, but the doors are twice my height. I leave our sisters and go upstairs, looking for him. He is using the computer in the kitchen and I sit next to him, on the same chair but barely touching. He shows me how to fight with animated soldiers.

The Entitlement List
Entitlement: belief that one is deserving of certain privileges
When men are invading your space (at the supermarket, jogging, the bank, lunch line) and think it’s okay.
“Nice guys” who feel they’re entitled to sex because they treat you well.
When you dress “slutty” ( it doesn’t matter you can be wearing a garbage bag) men feel entitled to comment on how provocative you look and how you deserve anything that THEY do to you because of it.
White people trying to touch POC’s hair.
White people trying to cultural appropriate other people’s cultures.
The N word. ” Why can’t we say it?!?”
