Saturday Vids: Best of “It Gets Better”
I’m sure a lot of you have seen at least one “It Gets Better” video. If you haven’t, it’s basically a project initiated to show LGBT youth that are struggling with their sexuality, and can’t imagine a future as an openly gay adult, especially in the face of bullying. A bunch of celebrities have pitched in speaking from the perspectives of allies and LGBT adults. It’s an awesome project, and Jezebel recently gathered what they think are the top 15 videos. Here are a few of my faves:
Tim Gunn (who opens up about his own past suicide attempt)
Barack Obama (It makes me hopeful that even the President is speaking out on this)
Perez Hilton (He’s pledging to stop bullying people on his own site. While I understand people see this as hypocritical…I hope EVERY bully decides to be a hypocrite and stop bullying. I’d take hypocrites over tormentors any day).

this makes me so sad/happy at the same time…sad that there are so many gay youth who are in so much pain and happy that there are people who are willing to help them. I was lucky that my family was very accepting and my home environment (neighborhood included) was very supportive and loving. However, in school, there was about zero tolerance for gays, and my gay friends and I learned to keep our mouths shut after watching others being tormented for being themselves…I can’t imagine being in that school without loving and supportive family and friends…I would have been so alone, so desperate, so depressed; sometimes it’s easy to see how many think that suicide is the only option, and that just breaks my heart.

I had this to say about the Obama one:

At the bottom of that post, btw, is the video with the Broadway groups’ It Gets Better video – it’s awesome.
