Hey, You! Go Make a Zine!

Are you interested in writing, creating, drawing, and DIY (“do it yourself”) ethics? Then you, my friend, should write a zine. A zine is a self published mini-magazine that can be about anything you want. Zines can be written, typed, drawn, xeroxed – it is all up to the creator. Zines have been a part of feminism to spread DIY punk feminism etc through local communities.

Zines can be traced back to riot grrrl bands, who created zines to spread their messages to their fans. Zines have recently been in decline because of blogs, but zines allow you to make a messy, imperfect, raw, funny, and inspiring piece of art that stands out in a world that obsesses over perfection and cleanliness.

To get started on a zine, all you need is paper, some pens, creativity, and access to a copier (if you wish to distribute your zine). Write what is on your mind, funny stories, obsessions of yours; about music, feminism, movies, books, love, girl power….anything you want! There are many formats to do a zine in: half page, mini, french fold, etc.

Distributing your zine is the next step. You can leave your zine anywhere you want: school, the library, bus stops, book stores, the doctor’s office, anywhere you want.

This is just a rudimentary guide, if you want more advice on zines check out the online Action Girl Newsletter, and look at Whatcha Mean? Whats a Zine? by Esther Watson and Mark Todd. It has helped me tremendously when starting my zine, Little Mary Sue Wants To Change The World.

Mary Sue (my nickname for my zine) is about anything that crosses my mind: feminism, music, quirky things, pictures, history, people, places, etc. For now, my zine is free until I start getting more orders, but if you are curious and want a copy, hit me up at marysuezine@gmail.com with your mailing address for a copy. I’ll send you one right away. Mary Sue is only available in print.

So what are you waiting for? Get off the internet and make a zine!

I have wanted to create a zine for years but never plucked up the courage to do so…. this has finally motivated me to make one! One quick question though, can parts of a zine be created with a computer; photoshop, type things out, ect?

Zines can definitely be made on the computer, printed, out then copied. All you need is a printer for zines made on the computer.
