Sick Of Sarah began in Minneapolis, MN in April 2005 as an all-female band with catchy hooks, unique lyrics and thoughtful, well-crafted music. The band displays talent, passion, and an ever-present sense of humor that shapes many of their songs. They combine sympathetic acoustic moments with driving electric rock, often in the same song. With influences ranging from John Fogerty to Joan Jett, Sleater-Kinney to Vanessa Carlton, Sick Of Sarah brings an energy and blended alternative pop-rock style that has listeners singing along after the first chorus.
Guitar player, lead singer, and songwriter, Abisha Uhl has an ear for pop, a mouth for rock, and an attitude for punk. She first picked up a guitar at age 13 in Okinawa, Japan where she lived until she was 18 and moved …
Saturday Vids: Modern Lady Defends Planned Parenthood
Gaaaaaaaaaaaaah. There are really no words for this insane action by our government. But there are words for the always awesome people of Current TV’s infomania, as they wittily tackle another social issue- the funding stripped of Planned Parenthood by Congress. Of course, there’s some consolation- NASCAR still gets government funding!
The day started out like any normal Monday. I changed into my blue and you-had-to-pay-for-this-lack-of-flattery concrete gray P.E. uniform, and walked out to join my peers in the Gym. The conversation was centered around the new school calendar (school now starts in August), and how much it would suck to run in ninety degree weather.
ME: Wow, that sucks. I’m so glad I’ll be going to private school next year!
PEERS: Whaa? *general astonishment*
I am transferring to the lovely local all-girls school next September. Upon discovering this fact, my classmates began exhibiting the signs one usually sees at a town hall meeting: shouting terrible logic and waving their arms about. Apparently, going to an all-girls school is tantamount to microwaving live kittens. They had two main arguments against me …
This semester in school I’m taking an Art History class. Full disclosure: I actually did not choose to be in this class, but because of scheduling conflicts was funneled in. In fact, I’m artistically challenged.
This has always been a point of contention for me. I love the arts. I’ve been surrounded by art, music and theatre my entire life – in fact, my Grandmother and Mom are both visual artists and my Dad and Brother are both in the theatre industry. And yet I’m thoroughly untalented. I pick up a paintbrush and I swear the paper tries to escape from my manic clutches.
Therefore, I was incredibly trepidatious in this class (which really is more art than history) until our major project of the semester was assigned. We were …
Recently, whilst speaking to my best friend, I couldn’t help but wonder about the level of seriousness in her relationship. It really made me think about how mature a relationship should be at the age of 21. We are at two very different ends of the relationship spectrum; I, at 20 years old, have never been in a serious relationship, whereas she has been with the same person for roughly 3 years. As of late, I sense that there is a lot less fervor in the way that she talks about her relationship.
So I say that to say this: How young is too young to be in a relationship for multiple years? Hell, should it even matter when you find love? Obviously, my perspective is always going to come …
I have this friend who’s in the year below me who insists that certain sexist institutions within society should be tolerated based on the fact that a couple million years ago there was a biological basis for it. He says that that’s why women shouldn’t be included in the draft and also uses it as a front for some scary homophobia and gender role enforcing (he said that a man shouldn’t be able to wear a dress and be considered straight.) When I pointed out to him, on the dress comment, that it wasn’t a biological reason, as he said, that men started wearing pants, but merely a helpful observation that wearing kilts/tunics didn’t really mix well with riding horses, the kid totally disregarded my comment.
