Red Sunflower Desire
I can remember
the first time I split
this earth open,
locked within the blooming
garden of sunflowers that
formed the upstairs bathroom.
I told you first
almost begging, asking about
how I should tell our parents.
You dragged me downstairs
and pushed me forward
spilling forth with the news
as we all sat there awkwardly,
my small frame I was already beginning
to hate
buried beneath the blue folds
of my bathrobe,
underwear pressing tightly to my skin
as if to brand me
with red secrets of shame that
I would carry through out
the years.
I checked off day one immediately
beginning a regular cycle
of forgetfulness and inconvenience for

Your Feminist History Lesson For The Day: The ERA
When people are being really annoying about the whole “do we still need feminism” thing, I find it less effective to start listing the thousands of reasons why we do, and more effective to slam whatever ignoramus I’m talking to with one solid reason…backed up by those other reasons, of course. That’s right: I break out the ERA.
Now, young feminist grasshoppers, as your resident feminist sensi, I feel that I must pass down the defense of the ERA to all of you, especially since it’s something that even the greatest of young feminists don’t really know about or understand (blame the dumbass history textbooks/courses/teachers who feel it’s more important to get on to Reagan than it is to talk about women’s history).

In Defense of Comprehensive Sex Education
A very hot-button issue that has brought feminists to the forefront is comprehensive sex education. It is something that Jessica Valenti defends vehemently in the notable Full Frontal Feminism, and that many teens have written passionately about here on the F-Bomb. As someone who believes that ignorance should be avoided at all times and that the current state of education is largely condescending to high school students, I have always been on the defensive side on this issue as well.

Katie Couric: What Does Her Reisgnation Mean?
For fifteen year Katie Couric said good morning as the co-anchor of NBC’s TODAY show until 2006 when she left to become the new anchor and managing editor of the CBS Evening News with her first broadcast on September 5, 2006.
Couric had big shoes to fill, taking the seat once filled by Walter Cronkite and Dan Rather, but none so big as her own. Couric was the first solo female anchor of a weekday evening news program on one of the three traditional U.S. broadcast networks, later joined by Diane Sawyer on ABC. However, Couric is now expected to resign her role in June.

My Reasons Why
Tonight I spoke with the grandfather of a friend of mine after a basketball game. The game had just ended, and we were standing around, waiting for the team to emerge from the locker room, making the usual sort of losing team whiny small talk that one might expect, when a cheerleader walked by. We had seen her all night, selling raffle tickets, flirting with the guys’ team, doing her cheer thing, but mostly, we saw her wearing that uniform.

Support Women Artists Sunday: Dum Dum Girls
Dum Dum Girls are an indie pop band from California currently signed to Sub Pop Records. Their name is a homage to The Vaselines album ‘Dum Dum’ and the Iggy Pop song “Dum Dum Boys”. The group also cites The Ronettes, The Ramones, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Patti Smith, Spacemen 3, and Mazzy Star amongst their major influences.
The members of the band each have the words “Dum Dum” tattooed on a finger. Front woman Dee Dee has been likened to a “goth rock Susana Hoffs (lead singer of The Bangles)” and the band as the answer to “What if the Bangles and the Cure had mated in 1982?” by Spinner’s Kenneth Partridge.
