The Go-Go’s were the most popular all-female band to emerge from the punk/new wave explosion of the late ’70s and early ’80s, becoming one of the first commercially successful female groups that wasn’t controlled by male producers or managers. While their hit singles — “We Got the Beat,” “Our Lips Are Sealed,” “Vacation,” “Head Over Heels” — were bright, energetic new wave pop, the group was an integral part of the Californian punk scene. And they did play punk rock, even if many of their rougher edges were ironed out by the time they recorded their first album, 1981′s Beauty and the Beat.
Even as they became America’s darlings, the Go-Go’s lived the wild life of rockers. More importantly, their earliest music — now collected on Return to the Valley …
The bottom line of college orientation is that it’s a paradox: feeling simultaneously deeply comforted and entirely thrown off your axis, spinning rapidly towards the unknown. Or at least, that’s what orientation was like for me.
This paradox manifested itself at the very beginning of the journey from Ohio to New York. After posting my obligatory, “Leaving for college. Thanks for the memories everybody!” Facebook status, I packed all of my earthly belongings into the family car. That’s when I realized that all of my earthly belongings fit into the family car. While the reality of this totally satisfied the fatalist in me (look how easy it would be for me to escape with so little materialistic baggage to weigh me down once the zombie apocalypse hits — yippee!) it …
You can read my full notes here, or listen to the actual call here. In short, the conference call discussed the rights that pregnant and parenting women have with regard to education. Lara Kaufmann explained how Title IX protects students, faculty, and staff at schools with federal funding from sex discrimination and how it applies to pregnant and parenting students. Jeannette Pai-Espinosa introduced her organization, explaining how it provides trauma-informed services to …
Observations in Target: Mass Marketing and Young Females
“Mom, look! That’s Rocky and CeCe, from ‘Shake it Up‘! Can I pleeeeease get one of their clothes?” She stands on her tiptoes to reach the highest shelf and points to a t-shirt with an attached pinstriped vest that is almost identical to the one CeCe is wearing in the poster above the rack of clothes. “I like that one!”
My post-elementary school years have contained very little Disney Channel, which I consumed vigorously as a child. But after spending a week with a seven-year-old, I was fully informed on how Disney is functioning today. I know every person says this about the shows they watched when they were kids, but I truly believe that the shows were much better then, especially for girls. Or maybe it’s just that …
So it is 1 A.M. Friday night (Saturday Morning? I never know) and whereas most people are thinking, “Hey so uh sleeeep.” I was thinking, “Let’s hop on a bus so I can get down to Chicago in time for Saturday!” Moral of the story: ride the Megabus, its cheap. Also, while the red eye buses have amazing availability, it is really hard to sleep when you are on the way to Lollapalooza. After sleeping only a few hours off and on, I was there.
So we leave our bags in our hotel, do the whole Starbucks thing, and then head over. Saturday’s lineup was incredible. Staying at one stage I got to be front row for 8 different wonderful artists, half of them female. So yadda yadda yadda, I’ll …
Checking In On DSK: Why The Case’s Dismissal Is Bad News For All Of Us
I’ll admit, I had never heard of the Dominique Strauss-Kahn – or DSK as he’s been dubbed – before this year. I had, however, heard of the International Monetary Fund, and although I’m not an economics student, I do read the news, and I have the vague knowledge that the IMF is big and important. Its decisions can have consequences for all of us, so having the right person to head the organisation is vital.
That’s why the scandal that engulfed Strauss-Kahn in May of this year was huge. To recap, whilst staying in New York, a maid at his hotel alleged that he had sexually assaulted her. He was arrested, pleaded not guilty, and was bailed after his supportive family paid out a huge sum. Meanwhile, the world’s media …
“Faces of Feminism” Project: Donate Your Face to Feminism!
Greetings, F-bombers!
My name is Danielle and I write for a blog called Experimentations of Teenage Feminist. You may remember someposts I’ve written in the past here on the FBomb. Well, now I have a new mission.
Society is fixated on a very narrow-minded image of what a feminist is “supposed” to look like, and I have a problem with that. On November 24th I’ll be publishing a special blog post titled “The Faces of Feminism” to show just how diverse the feminist community really is.
Please help this little experiment by sending in a picture of yourself for me to post!
Details:
• Photos can be sent to teenagefeminist@gmail.com (Deadline: November 17th)
• Please title your email “This is what a feminist looks like!”
• If you’d …
