An Interview with Gloria Feldt

Gloria Feldt

Gloria Feldt

Gloria Feldt, a former teen mother, was the president and CEO of Planned Parenthood. She is currently an activist, author and leading expert in women’s rights, leadership and politics and blogs about these topics. She has a special passion for encouraging young people, through the media, to participate in the political process on behalf of their own rights and health.

It’s hard to believe that Gloria Feldt, accomplished activist and fearless leader for women’s rights, wasn’t born a radical feminist, ready to slash the patriarchy. In fact, until she was a young adult, Ms. Feldt was set on a more traditional path. A teen mother and young wife living in Texas, it wasn’t until she experienced sexism in her own life that she began to think about feminism.

“I started trying to…

An Interview With Marie C. Wilson

Marie C. Wilson

Marie C. Wilson

In 2008, the world watched as Hilary Clinton campaigned for the Democratic Presidential nomination. Although she didn’t receive the nomination, the fact that she was able to even enter the race and was taken seriously, considering an attempt to do so even 50 years ago would have been dismissed and ridiculed by the nation, proves how far we’ve come. So often we take for granted the significant presence women have in politics today, and the people who made this happen. Marie C. Wilson is definitely one of these people, and one who won’t settle until women are not only present, but equally represented in politics.

Marie C. Wilson is former president of the Ms. Foundation for Women, where during her 20-year tenure she raised millions of dollars for programs…

An Interview with Carol Jenkins

Carol Jenkins

Carol Jenkins, WMC Founding President

It’s no secret that the media is dominated by men. The sexist treatment of Clinton and Palin in the election coverage is only one example of how women are viewed as less seriously as men, and certainly as less important in what we consider news. And while the treatment of women in news coverage is abominable, the story behind the scenes in news rooms isn’t much better.

Carol Jenkins, the founding president of the Women’s Media Center, knows all about it, and is working hard to combat it. The Women’s Media Center is a nonprofit advocacy organization that was founded in 2004 to make women more powerful in the media. She is also an Emmy award winning former television anchor and correspondent.

Ms. Jenkins talked with The FBomb…

An Interview with Sara K. Gould

Sara K Gould

Sara K Gould

It seems like you can’t turn on the news anymore without hearing about the disastrous pit of doom that is our economy. As often happens when people find themselves in a situation they have little control over, the blame game is in full force, and at the end of the pointing fingers there always seems to be a white man from Wall Street. It seems we are in unanimous agreement that the way the financial industry is run in our country, and in the world, needs to change. Sara K. Gould, president of the Ms. Foundation since 2004, and the founder of the Collaborative Fund for Women’s Economic Development (a program that supports female entrepreneurship) has a few ideas about improving economic wellbeing.

Ms. Gould earned her master’s degree…

The Oxymoron of Being BOTH a Female Musician & a Feminist

AKA: Do I Really Have to Put a Paper Bag Over My Head Just to Get You to Listen to What I Have to Say, Rather than Stare at My Ass?

Rose Cora Perry

Rose Cora Perry

I remember a few years back, I received the biggest insult of my life to date, in regards to my career as a professional musician. Some random dude (for no reason and without any provocation on my end) decided to send me a message which said (mind you, in fewer words and with worst grammar) that the only reason as to why I’ve had any success as an artist is because and I quote, “I’m a hot chick”. Not only was I offended because said individual essentially was saying that I had no talent whatsoever to back up…

An Interview with Amy Richards

 Amy Richards

Amy Richards

Here at The FBomb, we certainly do our part in defining what feminism means to teens today. While we’re still trying to figure out what our effect on feminism will be, the one thing we’re certain of is that despite our appreciation for the first and second waves of feminism, we are a wave unto ourselves – the third wave. It’s important that we develop our own voices and our own community, but bonds of sisterhood that span generations are equally as vital.

Amy Richards, writer (she wrote the AWESOME Manifesta: Young Women, Feminism and the Future), activist and co-founder of the Third Wave Foundation, understands this. The Third Wave Foundation is a “feminist, activist foundation that works nationally to support young women and transgender youth ages 15-30…working towards gender,…

REAL Deal Blog Guest Blog: My Thoughts On Women, Leadership and Politics

Back in December, I guest-blogged on the National Council for Research on Women’s blog The Real Deal

logo

The prompt was: What are your thoughts, as a young woman leader, on women, leadership and politics?

Not a tricky question at all, clearly. Here is my response:

My friends and I always agreed that if a global warming induced, Mount Everest-sized ocean wave surfed by polar bears doesn’t eat New York City, we’d probably kill ourselves due to the absolute ineffectiveness of our government.

My generation was raised in fear; if we’re not afraid of death by the environment, it’s terrorists infiltrating our school or gas prices preventing us from getting a car. I guess adults expected us to cower in fear, but instead we responded with defense. We’re more sarcastic, determined and imperturbable than anyone before us.

So,…
