The Oxymoron of Being BOTH a Female Musician & a Feminist

AKA: Do I Really Have to Put a Paper Bag Over My Head Just to Get You to Listen to What I Have to Say, Rather than Stare at My Ass?

Rose Cora Perry

I remember a few years back, I received the biggest insult of my life to date, in regards to my career as a professional musician. Some random dude (for no reason and without any provocation on my end) decided to send me a message which said (mind you, in fewer words and with worst grammar) that the only reason as to why I’ve had any success as an artist is because and I quote, “I’m a hot chick”. Not only was I offended because said individual essentially was saying that I had no talent whatsoever to back up…

An Interview with Amy Richards

 Amy Richards

Amy Richards

Here at The FBomb, we certainly do our part in defining what feminism means to teens today. While we’re still trying to figure out what our effect on feminism will be, the one thing we’re certain of is that despite our appreciation for the first and second waves of feminism, we are a wave unto ourselves – the third wave. It’s important that we develop our own voices and our own community, but bonds of sisterhood that span generations are equally as vital.

Amy Richards, writer (she wrote the AWESOME Manifesta: Young Women, Feminism and the Future), activist and co-founder of the Third Wave Foundation, understands this. The Third Wave Foundation is a “feminist, activist foundation that works nationally to support young women and transgender youth ages 15-30…working towards gender,…

REAL Deal Blog Guest Blog: My Thoughts On Women, Leadership and Politics

Back in December, I guest-blogged on the National Council for Research on Women’s blog The Real Deal

The prompt was: What are your thoughts, as a young woman leader, on women, leadership and politics?

Not a tricky question at all, clearly. Here is my response:

My friends and I always agreed that if a global warming induced, Mount Everest-sized ocean wave surfed by polar bears doesn’t eat New York City, we’d probably kill ourselves due to the absolute ineffectiveness of our government.

My generation was raised in fear; if we’re not afraid of death by the environment, it’s terrorists infiltrating our school or gas prices preventing us from getting a car. I guess adults expected us to cower in fear, but instead we responded with defense. We’re more sarcastic, determined and imperturbable than anyone before us.

Gloria Steinem: The Iconic Feminist Speaks to our Generation

Gloria and Me!

Gloria and Me

Who is Gloria Steinem?

Any given teenage girl can rattle off the most intimate details about random T.V. starlets, but so many of us are unaware of a woman who has had so much impact on our lives just because she doesn’t throw herself into the media.

Gloria Steinem is a badass and deserves greater appreciation from our generation.
More concretely, she is a feminist activist, organizer, writer and lecturer. She co-founded magazines like Ms. Magazine, which is still a great feminist read, and helped to found organizations such as the Ms. Foundation for Women, Choice USA, and the Women’s Media Center.

She’s written about everything from advertising to networking, but what she’s probably most known for is her expose on the Playboy organization, for which she worked undercover as a Playboy…
