Cecile Richards Explains What Planned Parenthood Actually Does
In 1973, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that banning abortion is unconstitutional. Yet despite being legalized, a woman’s right to choose has possibly never been more threatened in this nation. Or at least this is what President of Planned Parenthood Cecile Richards has found, especially in the light of various attacks on and misconceptions spread about the organization this year, she told Katie Couric in a Yahoo! News interview published last Tuesday.
Planned Parenthood has been attacked for years, but recently faced a particularly invective series of sting videos claiming the organization sold and profited from the tissue of aborted fetuses. Women leaders are often evaluated in terms of an impossible double standard based on a feminine, maternal stereotype. New Jersey: Women’s Health #Fail
Three months ago, the country was on fire for women’s health. Remember that rally for women’s health in Foley Square where thousands turned out to hear Congressman Anthony Weiner, Kathleen Hanna, Jasmine Burnett, Cecile Richards, and countless other champions for reproductive rights?
Well, a lot has changed since then, and I’m not talking about Weinergate. At the Rally for Women’s Health, I decided I needed to take a public stand and talk about my own experience as a proud patient of Planned Parenthood. I made a YouTube video explaining that I first started using Planned Parenthood as a teen with no money and nowhere to turn for private, safe, and affordable “well-woman” care. I sent it to everyone I could think of.
