Silencing the Fear: Coming Out As A Feminist

In a day and age in which many people believe feminism is no longer needed or just outright misunderstand what feminism actually is, coming out and saying the words “I am a feminist” can be quite daunting. Doing so as a teenager is particularly intimidating. Considering that so many people our age believe stereotypes such as all feminists are lesbians who don’t shave their legs and burn their bras, it’s hardly surprising that many of us are reluctant to openly declare our belief in gender equality.

When Your Friends Don’t Get Feminism

I recently experienced something deeply upsetting that as fellow feminists I am sure you all can relate to. It was like any other summer evening, a group of my friends (3 guys, 4 girls) were sitting in a circle in my  guy friend’s backyard. At some point in the conversation, my good female friend (a bio/chem major) asked me to explain – on a basic level – what exactly women’s studies (which is what I’m studying) entails. As I always do when I get asked this question, I took a deep breath and carefully calculated my response. How To Be a High School Feminist

On our way to high school recently, I asked my friend, “Do you consider yourself a feminist?”

After a slight hesitation, she responded, “Well, I support women’s rights and all, but I’m no bra burner.”

Besides the fact that the bra-burning story is apocryphal, I was surprised by her answer. Is that what feminism meant to this smart girl?

As I’ve discovered what feminism means to me over the past couple years, I am repeatedly shocked by what others think of the movement. One highly accomplished woman I know declared that feminism was dead. Another scoffed when I said I was interested in attending a women’s college. Why is there so much animosity toward such a simple, important ideal—that women deserve equal rights?
