This Is What a Feminist Looks Like

In the first meeting of my Gender Theory class my professor asked the class if we were feminists. I think all but one hand (out of 8 students) was raised. I experienced a brief moment of shock and pleasure – shock because this was the first time I’d been in a room (other than meetings of the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance, of course) where almost everyone identified as a feminist, and pleased  because I was surrounded by so many feminists.

Why Don’t Teen Girls Identify as Feminists?

I’ll just get it out of the way: Barnard’s Young Women’s Leadership Institute was an amazing program, and one of the best experiences of my life. We had some really awesome speakers/workshops (including Ingrid Dahl from the Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls – awesome) and really engaging teachers. But that’s not what I want to talk about. What I want to talk about are the approximately 55 girls who were selected for this program – the future women leaders of America – and what they thought about feminism.

Being Indian AND A Feminist? Has The World As I Know It Come To An End?

crazily enough, there are feminists here, too…

I’m fairly new to this space called the “feminist blogosphere”. My blog is just shy of being six months old and has recently become a tad bit famous over the last month or so. With this e-fame (however brief or slight) comes a bigger responsibility :  handling trolls who infest my space everyday. My troll-mail isn’t that different from most of your troll-mail  (with the ever-charming photographs of their boners, neatly listed reasons why I suck and need to put my head in the oven, how my writing is so deeply unoriginal that it makes the troll cry etc you know the sort) However, one thing all my trolls point out is — how am I an Indian and a Feminist?
