Orphan Black: The Feminist Show You Need To Watch
While we are arguably currently experiencing the golden age of TV, thanks to shows like Orange is the New Black, Mad Men, The Game of Thrones, and House of Cards, we are also inundated by shameful, “reality” crap. With so many options, either for exciting, interesting television or mind-numbing selections best used as background noise (for me, it’s “Say Yes to the Dress”. Not even a little bit guilty), it’s hard to know what’s worth spending time on. I’m here to break it down for you.
Orphan Black is the show everyone should be watching. Not only does this show blow the Bechdel test out of the water, but it’s thought-provoking, darkly funny, science-fiction-y in a way that non-geeks can enjoy, and it handles topics that our society cannot …

Saturday Vids: Ur Allure
I think we can all agree that, generally, when it comes to the portrayal of women in the media — in terms of everything from gender roles, to beauty standards to depictions of female sexuality and beyond — there are few sources of positive and empowering messaging. Well there’s a company out there that want’s to change that: Ur Allure, a website that “creates media content for you, the young women of today’s generation” using the formula of “MEDIA + ENTERTAINMENT + SELF-WORTH MESSAGE.” I for one can’t wait to see what they do.

Magazine Crisis: Bitch Magazine
I don’t get intricately handwritten letters very often. So, I settle for the next best thing: a magazine addressed to yours truly every month! Awesome, right? I certainly thought it was and I was quite content with that arrangement until I noticed that, frankly, the mainstream magazines I was subscribing to were just big ol’ pots of mindlessness. In fact, I made a list proving this.
Mindless Things Frequently Featured in Mindless Magazines:
- How to get a freakin’ cute butt!
- REEL IN THE MAN OF YOUR DREAMS! (Ahem, not considering any women of your dreams, plus other problems)
- Airbrushing galore
- Consumerism on every page.
So, I cancelled my subscriptions to said mindless magazines and felt utterly gloomy at the prospect of what these magazines are …
