The Case for a Gender Studies Requirement

Earlier this Fall, as leaves fell all over my college’s campus, something bubbled under the surface and all over Yik Yak, the popular anonymous Twitter-like app. It began as a series of “yaks” attacking our campus Women’s Center, and quickly escalated to full-on attacks on women. The yaks were terrifying and deeply, deeply disturbing — not only because of their anonymity, vulgarity, and harshness, which were all scary in their own right, but also because they opened our eyes.

They were decidedly unfunny, but many were passed off as misguided jokes. We said “this would never happen here,” and “people here don’t feel this way.” I said, “I’ve never felt unsafe before,” and “who could be here and be this sexist?” We pride ourselves on the tenets of our …

Masculinity: From A Feminine Perspective

It pains me a little bit to say this, but I have to admit it. I’m kind of a hypocrite. I’ve spent over a year on this blog exploring most every facet of being a teen girl in this culture through a feminist lens. I’ve bitched (and rightfully so) about how there’s still a shit ton of sexism out there and how we still need to fight for equality, but I never really mentioned the guys.

This Is What a Feminist Looks Like

In the first meeting of my Gender Theory class my professor asked the class if we were feminists. I think all but one hand (out of 8 students) was raised. I experienced a brief moment of shock and pleasure – shock because this was the first time I’d been in a room (other than meetings of the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance, of course) where almost everyone identified as a feminist, and pleased  because I was surrounded by so many feminists.
