Why Do Sexists Hate The New ‘Ghostbusters’?

The new ‘Ghostbusters’ cast.

The announcement that a gender-swapped reboot of Ghostbusters will soon be in theaters has generated quite a bit of excitement. Considering the top-notch comedy actresses at the project’s helm, including Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones, the hype is likely justified. But this excitement isn’t universal: As so often happens whenever any media is centered on women, indignant and frustrated misogynists have decided to criticize the film on social media. The blatantly sexist responses of these pitiful man-babies — not to mention their attempts to rationalize their behavior — are likely produced by many causes, but the persistent sexism in both geek culture and the entertainment industry undoubtedly rank high among them.

Geek culture has become increasingly popular in mainstream pop culture over …

Saturday Vids: Amy Poehler at Harvard College

It is no secret to those who know me well that the women of SNL past and present are my personal pantheon of goddesses, to which I worship on a regular basis. I recently got my Tina Fey fix, reading her hilarious and surprisingly feminist book Bossypants. Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph came into my life a few weeks ago in the form of the funniest movie I've probably ever seen, Bridesmaids. But there was a palpable absence in my life: WHERE WAS AMY POEHLER? Thankfully, I came across this video of her recent speech at Harvard. Since it doesn’t come out until Friday (May 13), this was pretty exciting.

I was su-huper excited to see Bridesmaids; I do usually enjoy Judd Apatow movies and all the lead actresses are some of my faves. And honestly I was interested in seeing how the Judd Apatow formula would work with an all-female cast. I mean, this is the director/producer …

Whip It!

I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS MOVIE. I love Ellen Page. If they made a movie that consisted entirely of her eating soup and talking to a cat, I'd see it. And I'd love it. I'm weird, moving on. Drew Barrymore directed, and joining Ellen are Marcia Gay Harden, Kristen Wiig and Alia Shawkat (Maeby from Arrested Development!) Totally girl-centric (not just that but super-talented girls, as well) and looks like it paints these girls as passionate and powerful. I'm psyched! Thanks to Appetite for Equal Rights for the heads up!
