Egg Freezing: Is This Silicon Valley Perk Really Empowering?

Last week, it was announced that Silicon Valley tech giants Facebook and Apple are offering coverage of egg freezing as part of female employees’ health benefits. A huge step, news outlets cried, towards equality for women in a heavily male-dominated industry. But is encouraging women to postpone having children really in the best interest of women?

To Facebook and Apple’s credit, each company offers a suite of benefits for women looking to start a family, ranging from coverage of fertility treatments to daycare. These benefits, in addition to free gourmet meals, lavish vacations, and sometimes even free housing, have been branded as a “War of Perks” through which tech companies entice prospective employees to join their team. There is a major difference, however, between free beer and frozen eggs …

Ileana Jiménez: Inspiring Feminism Locally and Globally

Ileana Jimenez

Social media as well as blogs and communities like the FBomb have played a key role for young people involved in the feminist movement by giving us a platform to share our thoughts and ideas and allowing us to learn about and discover feminism by scrolling through our social media newsfeeds or browsing the blogosphere. This phenomenon is also becoming more prevalent every day (according to Facebook, #feminism is trending).

However, I came to the movement through a high school feminism class taught by Ileana Jiménez called “Fierce and Fabulous Feminism”. This class has become a rite of passage for many of my peers and me and is the only class I’ve ever taken in which the students agree not only that the class should be two hours

What Young Feminists Need To Know About The Hobby Lobby Ruling

As a rising college senior, I’ve already been inundated with cautionary tales of being female while working in corporate America. Now, thanks to the recent Hobby Lobby ruling, my generation of women can add potentially working for companies whose rights are valued above our own and the blatant undermining of our health and reproductive freedom to the list of our future professional rewards.

Monday’s Hobby Lobby ruling solidifies the reality of the war on women in this country, indisputably highlighting the way in which sexism is still rampant in American society in several ways.

First and foremost, the decision reveals that persistent, blatant ignorance about women’s bodies has infiltrated the law of the land. The Hobby Lobby suit incorrectly conflates birth control with pregnancy termination by objecting to insurance …

Why I Shared my Abortion Story With North Carolina Law Makers

My voice was trembling when I spoke the words “I decided to choose abortion.” I was telling my personal story and expressing my opposition of House Bill 695, a bill that would shut down all but one abortion clinic in the state of North Carolina. It started to hit me that I was in front of lawmakers, anti-choicers, supporters and television cameras. My legs started to go numb and my hands started to shake. I had to remind myself to look every lawmaker that has voted against women in the eye. Before I knew it, I was thanking them for their time and walking to my seat.

Every woman’s situation is unique, but my story is this: I was eighteen years old, a senior in high school, and I was …

Thinking About Egg Donation

I recently saw a thought-provoking documentary about egg donation and its legal ramifications in Germany. The documentary followed several people: a couple that could not have their own children, a young woman who had some of her own eggs frozen, a family that had already gone through the process, and several doctors, lawmakers and people concerned with the ethics of egg donation.

The biggest problem with egg donation in Germany (besides the social taboo associated with donation, which is featured prominently in the subtitle of the documentary) is that it’s actually illegal and can be punished with up to 3 years in prison for the parents — or more accurately, the mother. For doctors, it’s not only actually performing the egg donation that is illegal, but also preparing women for …

Memo to the Right Wing: Women Know You Really Have Our Backs

If Ann Romney says the GOP loves women then it MUST be true!

Dear Right Wing,

On behalf of my country and my gender, I would just like to say that I’m so sorry the media has cruelly misconstrued your obviously well-intentioned musings on rape and rape-related pregnancies. SO frustrating, guys! For some reason women get all sensitive and dramatic when it comes to what the government will force us to do or not to do after being sexually assaulted.

I know, sometimes the political environment just seems so darn friendly to social extremism that you let you guard down for ONE moment and try to have an intelligent conversation with mature adults about how rape and resulting pregnancies are God’s will, and in fact, “gifts” from God and suddenly …

A Take On the U.S. Presidential Election from Across the Pond

I am not someone who attacks others for their personal beliefs. I do not openly ridicule people for having a specific belief system…unless that belief becomes a law by which I am forced to live my life.

I’m sure you’ve all been hearing about the current hot topic of women’s reproductive rights in the American presidential race. I’m sure you’ve gathered that there are many Republicans who are in favour of not only making some types of contraceptives illegal, but also banning abortion, despite whether the pregnancy was due to rape and/or incest — and I hope you’re angry about it. I consider myself lucky to live in the UK, because while our government is in no way perfect, they’re not telling me what to do with my body, either.

Saturday Vids: Republicans, Get In My Vagina

I’ve posted this Funny or Die video before, but it’s never been more relevant. Plus, after the past few weeks, I think it’s necessary for the sake of our mental health to inject a little humor into this political climate…
