Not So Gleeful: What’s Wrong With GQ’s Latest Shoot

So, I know this is kind of dated, but please make fun of me, consider my humble excuse of being a senior coming up on college application deadlines, and then attempt to enjoy!

The reaction from feminists to the “Glee” themed photo shoot in the newest issue of GQ – a popular men’s magazine – wasn’t exactly surprising. The shot, which was done by infamous photographer Terry Richardson (no stranger to overtly sexual photo shoots and even sexual harassment claims) features three of the main stars of the Fox TV show in almost pornographic poses. Of course, there has been plenty of uproar concerning the fact that these overtly sexual images are borderline pedophilic – due to the fact that these actors portray teenaged characters and cater to a …

What Does Christine O’Donnel Mean for Feminism?

First off, in all seriousness, I’d like to congratulate O’Donnel for making it this far in politics. It’s definitely not an easy game, particularly for women. Politics is still, unfortunately, largely a man’s world. Women who break through deserve credit, and that should be given to O’Donnel.

According to The White House Project’s 2009 Benchmarks Report, Women make up only 17% of the U.S. House and the Senate, only 23.6% of State Executive Officials, hold only 24.3% of seats in State Legislatures, and there are only 6 female governors – and that’s just the start of the shocking statistics. Usually, I can say that I wholeheartedly support any woman running for any political position around the country, regardless of whether or not I believe 110% in her politics. Just because …

Recently, Annie Barr from The [i4c] Campaignan interactive campaign that seeks to create a better tomorrow by supporting change-making entrepreneurs – interviewed the awesome duo Tegan and Sara (check out the FBomb’s SWAS on them here). I personally think they’re great, and their answers to the question “what do you foresee in a better world?”

Bitches Get Stuff Done

Just do a search on Facebook with the name of Australia’s new Prime Minister Julia Gillard and you’ll get a page full of results that poke fun at her due to her gender. To pick the two most popular pages as examples, we’ve got “How the hell is Julia Gillard meant to run the country from her kitchen?” and “Dear Julia Gillard, if I vote for you, you better make me a sandwich”.

Stay classy, Australia.

Firstly, as I know that the majority of you aren’t up to speed with Australian politics, I’ll explain how it is that Gillard came to power. The circumstances in which Julia Gillard came to power a mere 90 or so days ago were considered controversial by much of Australia. Though …

Struggling With Body Image

I’m not happy with the way I look. I may tell you that I am, but I’m not. I constantly worry if I’m too fat to wear certain clothes, too fat to be desirable, too fat to be beautiful. Who should I turn to for support? My friends? My family?

They feel exactly the same way. All of them, every single person I know says the same thing, that thinness is interchangeable with beauty, that skinny=good and “fat” = bad.

Some teenage girls live in a world where nobody, and I mean nobody, can offer support if they’re worried about their body.

Blame the media. Blame my friends. Blame the media for influencing my friends.

I don’t care who you blame because, I don’t see a way to change it …

Self Respect and Sexting

Self Respect is a dying art. This thought was solidified when I heard the latest gossip in my school of the sex video going around of a fellow female student with two other guys. As we see a rise in “sexting” and the CDC saying that one in four teenage girls has an STD, I can’t help but feel depressed and frustrated . So how did we get this way and better yet how are we to combat this issue?

At my highschool, I have sat through the numerous internet safety lectures. ” Once it’s out there you can never get it back.” This doesn’t seem to stop many girls from taking pictures of themselves topless or lying spread eagle while their boyfriend snaps pictures. I don’t mean to …

An Interview With Marie C. Wilson

In 2008, the world watched as Hilary Clinton campaigned for the Democratic Presidential nomination. Although she didn’t receive the nomination, the fact that she was able to even enter the race and was taken seriously, considering an attempt to do so even 50 years ago would have been dismissed and ridiculed by the nation, proves how far we’ve come. So often we take for granted the significant presence women have in politics today, and the people who made this happen. Marie C. Wilson is definitely one of these people, and one who won’t settle until women are not only present, but equally represented in politics.

Marie C. Wilson is former president of the Ms. Foundation for Women, where during her 20-year tenure she raised millions of dollars for programs promoting …

The New Miss Universe Thinks We’re Post-Feminism

Stefania Fernandez, the 18-year-old Miss. Venezuela, won the 2009 Miss Universe crown on Sunday.

Normally, I’d probably just sigh and say something sassy. To me, the reasons why beauty pageants are sexist/anti-feminist and just plain stupid are pretty freakin obvious– such as blatant objectification and valuing beauty above all else. Again, the self-esteem excuse is complete crap. If being judged almost entirely on the way you look is building your self-esteem, well all I’ll say is there’s a hella lot more you could be proud of yourself for than something (like looks) that is mostly beyond your control. I say mostly because I guess starvation, hair removal, and the use of excessive makeup could be in your control, but that’s a WHOLE other story.

I didn’t watch the pageant. So …
