In Defense of Comprehensive Sex Education
A very hot-button issue that has brought feminists to the forefront is comprehensive sex education. It is something that Jessica Valenti defends vehemently in the notable Full Frontal Feminism, and that many teens have written passionately about here on the F-Bomb. As someone who believes that ignorance should be avoided at all times and that the current state of education is largely condescending to high school students, I have always been on the defensive side on this issue as well.
In the past month, I have experienced sex ed at my public high school, and my defense of comprehensive sex education has become infinitely more fervid. The majority of my friends, including the three that I spend my health class with, are virgins. Out of the four of us, none …

NuvaRing: Sexual Misinformation?
So I’m watching Glee on Hulu because homework is boring and the internet is slowly but surely taking over the world. And because I don’t like interruptions, I opt at the beginning of the clip to watch the two-minute NuvaRing spot, instead of watching the whole episode with commercials throughout.
The scene: there are a bunch of women (props to NuvaRing, they’re not all white) sitting around a pretty garden table, laughing together as they share their hilarious, completely relatable experiences with birth control pill mishaps. The woman in purple embarks on a gripping story about how she dropped a pill while on the subway, and started calling around to pharmacies to ask “if they had any extras.” One pharmacist tells her, “You could probably just use protection, like condoms…”…

You Will Get Pregnant And Die
Sex education is an experience that brings two memories to mind- the first of walking, red faced and weak kneed, to the desk in front of the class room, on which a monstrous, purple, shiny, plastic penis stands erect next to a trojan condom. I am expected to slip the condom onto the penis, but my hands are too sweaty to open the wrapper. The class breaks down into hysterical laughter, the kind of hyena-like shrieks that only a room full of 12 year old girls can produce. I repeat “this too shall pass, this too shall pass” over and over to myself while trying to figure out how to possibly stretch such a small condom over such a large phallus.
The second takes place 4 years later in high …

What Does Christine O’Donnel Mean for Feminism?
First off, in all seriousness, I’d like to congratulate O’Donnel for making it this far in politics. It’s definitely not an easy game, particularly for women. Politics is still, unfortunately, largely a man’s world. Women who break through deserve credit, and that should be given to O’Donnel.
According to The White House Project’s 2009 Benchmarks Report, Women make up only 17% of the U.S. House and the Senate, only 23.6% of State Executive Officials, hold only 24.3% of seats in State Legislatures, and there are only 6 female governors – and that’s just the start of the shocking statistics. Usually, I can say that I wholeheartedly support any woman running for any political position around the country, regardless of whether or not I believe 110% in her politics. Just because …

Street Harassment and Sluts
I’m currently studying abroad in Quito, Ecuador, and I love nearly all of it so far. One of the things I do NOT love, however, is the prevalence of harassment here. I’m kind of accustomed to harassment because I go to school in Philadelphia. Usually when guys yell, “I loove youuu!” or call us pretty and stuff we’re on the street and they’re in cars, or we can easily get away from them.
However, last Friday, a few friends and I had to sit diagonally across from some 3 drunk harassers while we were trying to enjoy a French-fry break from our discoteca-night. And they would not give up. We ignored them for a while, and then one of them came over with a half-full glass of beer and offered …
